Just yesterday morning we were enjoying this gorgeous view of our estate vineyard as we got ready to bring in our first grapes of the season. Today, we pray for Sonoma County as wildfires, sparked by the recent lightning storms, have led to evacuations north of the winery. Today is our first day of harvest on National Pinot Noir Day! Red Car Harvest officially began this morning, August 18th, at the Heaven & Earth Vineyard for our first pick of the 2020 vintage. The recent heat wave accelerated grape ripening at our warmest vineyard sites and we are ready to bring in fruit all week. Stay tuned for more on our 2020 vintage during our 20th anniversary!

Happy July, friends! Here’s a cellar update from our winemaker, Tanner: This year has absolutely flown by for us here in the cellar, as we find ourselves in the month of July, preparing for bottlings and thinking about harvest. This time of year is one of my very favorites in the winery, as Kenny and I have been racking, blending and working with our young 2019 wines every day. Cellar work has been an integral part of my life from the time that I was a teenager, and i...s something that I genuinely love to do. During the last several weeks, we have been immersed in every element of the 2019 vintage; a vintage that we are very, very excited about. Our Pinot Noirs are incredibly energetic, aromatic and beautiful, expressing each site in their own unique way. Our Chardonnay from 2019 is still very tightly wound and somewhat shy, but we have come to know the potential of these wines, and what they will become: delicate, aromatic and mineral driven. Syrah and Cabernet is hiding away in barrel, sleeping through the offseason where they’ll remain until the spring of next year. We are 20 in 2020! As some of you know, Red Car is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. To commemorate this milestone, we asked our co-founder, Richard Crowell, to share his journey in three chapters. In Chapter 1, Richard provides a glimpse of how it all got started. Any guesses on the first varietal that Red Car produced? If Syrah comes to mind, then you guessed right! Our first bottling was just 50 cases of Syrah in Los Angeles in one of our co-founders' gar...ages. Our first label featured a drawing of an old Los Angeles Pacific Electric Trolley Car and the words Red Car in a bull’s-eye. The distinctive front label was a nod to a romantic, idealized past in our home city of Los Angeles. With praise from friends who happened to be sommeliers, our first 50 cases sold quickly, and we declared ourselves a business."
