Digital Media Arts has come so far over... We're currently working on animating the James Lick Observatory. When completed, the dome(s) will rotate, the doors to the telescope(s) will open and close and the telescopes will be able to aim at specific, pre-programmed celestial objects. It's a multi-level project that will take approximately 6 more months... Can't wait!

This is a tragedy, one that has been repeated many times over throughout history. This is a stark reminder of the importance of the digital documentation of historic sites. CyArk and the UNESCO World Heritage Organization are currently working on documenting heritage sites around the world. At one point, there was a major project proposed by CyArk, simply called the "El Camino Real Project". This project involved the mapping of the 21 Spanish Missions and 24 Pueblos from the Mexican border to Sonoma in Northern California. This project and many other interesting and important projects have been abandoned due to a perceived general lack of interest in historic preservation in the United States.

This video really gets me excited about this year's Reality Capture Technology Center summer project. The digital documentation of the James Lick Observatory. This project has been funded by a grant from the County of Santa Clara. We are awaiting confirmation from the UC and the county to set our project schedule. If you are interested in participating as an intern, engineering, teacher or student, please contact me via messenger. We welcome student/participants ages 12 to 100 years old.

How many of you recall the San Jose Gran Prix? Unless you're new to the area or under the age of 15, you should. The SJ Gran Prix was really exciting for race fans but for downtown business owners, it was a pain in the rear. Complaints from businesses plus the exorbitant cost to host the race were the final nails in the coffin for the event. Over the past few months, I've been busy collecting scan data throughout downtown San Jose. I realize that I have 60-70% of the race co...urse captured in great detail. (9mm) Last week, I was discussing my 2020 summer engineering camp with reps at Google. This year's project is to create a digital twin of the Diridon Station but politics have made this very challenging to say the least. So, what to do...? My colleagues at SJSU and UCSC engineering and I have come up with an interesting idea: we take the raw scan data from downtown and create an online video competition/game/race. Is it possible? Of course! Developing 3D environments from real scan data is how many video games are created. EA Sports, Madden football, NBA Basketball environments are all derived from scan data collected in stadiums and arenas. Love this concept! Though from a historical perspective, a digital twin of the train station is extremely important and valuable for our archives, an online race through downtown would be awesome! Check out this game developed using this technology.
