As part of our visibility work during Pride Month, Spanish teacher Maria included LGBTQ themes in her kindergarten curriculum before rolling up her sleeves to make amor es amor (love is love) T-shirts with our students in a rainbow of colors. It was a group effort, made possible by many helping hands and stencils created with our colab lasercut! #prospectsierra #pride #pridemonth #kindergarten #Spanish #amoresamor #loveislove

Last week we were lucky to have Ross Gay with us for a reading and conversation with our own Nisa Frank. Ross is a poet and author of the New York Times bestselling essays The Book of Delights and book of poetry called The Catalogue of Unabashed Gratitude. His most recent publication is Be Holding, a book-length poem. Thank you for a truly delightful and inspiring evening, Ross! In case you missed it, you can watch the recording here: http://bit.ly/RossGayDelight. #prospectsierra #poetry #poet #writing #rossgay #delight

In 6th grade art with Julie, students have been learning about artist Yayoi Kusama, one of the world's most beloved female artists and also the most expensive. This year one of her paintings sold for over 62 million dollars! At 92, Yayoi continues to create paintings, sculptures, film, interactive installations, music, performances, fiction, poetry, and fashion. She has been called the "Queen of Polka Dots" because a lot of her work includes dots and patterns. Creating these... patterns is her way of connecting with the world and with the infinite. We love how our 6th grade artists interpreted Yayoi's work in their own unique ways with these paintings! #prospectsierra #6thgrade #art #yayoikusama #painting #create

Please enjoy our latest community share from 5th grade teacher Marlene Costa as we work to challenge the myth of the Asian and Asian American monolith by learning about the diversity of cultural backgrounds and histories of the many unique peoples included within this very broad category. Growing up half Chinese, Marlene wished that she had seen different representations of Asians, and thinks it's important to remind herself and others that there are many ways to be Asian. A...s a young person, the film The Joy Luck Club provided Marlene with powerful mirrors, and she currently looks up to individuals such as Asian American actress Awkwafina and Japanese professional tennis player Naomi Osaka. #prospectsierra #asianamerican #chineseamerican #identity #mirrors

Enjoy our middle school band elective students improvising on John Coltrane's minor blues tune "Mr. P.C.", under the direction of music elective teacher Steve Hogan! We appreciate these musicians' fearless willingness to film their own performance footage, and the care with which Steve brought everyone's contributions together! #prospectsierra #middleschool #music #jazz #band #improv

Happy Kwanzaa from us to you! Prospect Sierra 4th grader, Maya, invites you to learn about the seven principles of Kwanzaa through her newly created YouTube series, Maya’s Bay Area Stories. Join the conversation inspired by her daily reflection question. Thank you, Maya, for demonstrating Kujichagulia (self-determination), Nia (purpose), and Kuumba (creativity that leaves the world more beautiful than we found it)!

Yesterday our entire elementary school community was greeted by a special surprise guest, author and illustrator Yuyi Morales, during a live Friday morning meeting to end our year together. Yuyi introduced us to her recurring character Señor Calavera and answered students' questions about her book Dreamers. We ended the meeting by inviting everyone to share books that told pieces of their own stories. It was an inspiring way to wrap up 2020! #prospectsierra #stories #read #books #identity #dreamers #community
