Flo Fox - Asphalt Gardens 69 Photographs. Here's a story I did not know. Flo Fox, born 1945 blind in one eye, color blind in the other, striken with MS and now legally blind and cannot walk. Totally disabled from the neck down since 1999, she directs friends, attendants, or people in the street to take pictures for her. She shoots with an auto focus (point and shoot) camera and uses an auto focus enlarger to make prints. "Technology has kept up with my needs." she said on a R...egis and Kathy Lee visit once. She has been an advocate for the disabled. The consummate trail-blazer, she taught the first photography class for the blind and visually impaired to students at the Lighthouse International for the blind in 1979. She exhibited in Paris with her idol, Weegee. I love this book and its design (which is ADA Compliant and the most legible for Flo) and am determined to find others of her. I encourage you all to look her up and watch some of the videos of her online, including a 9:00 documentary. What an inspiring character. . . . #photobookfinds #photobooks #artbooks #photobook #photobookjousting #photography #monograph #NYC #FloFox #Pointandshoot #AsphaltGardens #BWPhotography #olympus See more

Bruce Davidson - SUBWAY - 1st printing & signed. As we ring in 2022, this is just a reminder that we all need more Bruce Davidson in our lives. Throughout his career, his work has broken through. He's considered one of the most influential photographers of all time. He once said "My wife has made me see that the facts of someone’s life are more important than my artistic expression." This book, printed 3 times, is the result of half a decade spent exploring the subway system... in the 1980s. A study of light and color as well as a historical document of a key part of New York. "I wanted to transform the subway from its dark, degrading, and impersonal reality into images that open up our experience again to the color, sensuality, and vitality of the individual souls that ride it each day. It's a great social equalizer." This book was by no means a "find" or even a "steal" - I bought it online for $140. I see this book as an investment and also a requirement for my collection (or any collection). I have no doubt that it'll increase in value and will be referenced as one of the most important photo books every published. I looked up Cal Grotnes, whom this book is inscribed, in hopes he’d be someone interesting, but no luck. Couldn’t find a thing on him. Just a guy. . . . #photobookfinds #photobooks #artbooks #photobook #photobookjousting #photography #monograph #NYC #subway #NYCSubway #BruceDavidson #MagnumPhotos #ColorPhotography #everybodystreet #leica See more

Bryan Schutmaat - Good Goddamn, published by @trespasserbooks is a short photobook about Bryan's friend, Kris and his last few days of freedom before going to prison. The book is only 27 photographs and is staple bound with handwritten Good God Damn on the cover. I recently read an article in @aperturefnd where Michael Fried is quoted as saying that photobooks matters as art as never before. The article continues "They are thought of as singular objects - each volume has i...ts own identity. While maintaining the conflation between the container and the content, they also claim that the photobook is a form of art in itself." You can see their popularity by trying to find and buy ANY book by Bryan Schutmaat. Impossible. I've had my eyes peeled for this book and others of his for a year and only recently came across this last copy at @icp in NY. It's the 1st edition which is long sold out and even the 2nd printing is sold out too. I paid fairly for it and believe it'll be considered a classic of Bryan's in what will be a rich career in photobooks as art. . . . #photobookfinds #photobooks #artbooks #photobook #photobookjousting #photography #monograph #TX #TrespasserBooks #Texas #ICP #BryanSchutmaat #DontMessWithTexasWomen See more

This year gave me the opportunity to spend way too much time on my phone and laptop scouring sites like eBay, Abe books, Amazon, book shop sites and publisher sites to find things I’ve had on my list for a long time. It’s one thing to wander into a shop and discover something new. It’s another to hunt for a particular title and not let up until you find it. It builds a different muscle. I’ve been posting used found books for months but wanted to take this opportunity to sh...are my favorite 8 new titles that I bought this year. 1. @biekedepoorter - AGATA. Crazy ambitious book. I’ve never felt more like a voyeur in my life. 2. @mattblack_blackmatt - American Geography - Phenomenal book. Becoming one of the greats. 3. @bumdogtorres - Find the Bumdog. I think BD produced 3 books this year. They’re all great. Give him a ton of love. 4. KOCHETOV - recent acquisition. Viktor and Sergey. Father/son. An underground method of hand-colouring black-and-white photographs called Luriki. Super cool. 5. The San Quentin Project - @nigelpoor . I listened to all of Ear Hustle. Nice to be able to put some visuals to it 6. @gigilaub - Family Matters. Vivid photos of the realities involved in her family. Hilarious at times. 7. @wardlong - Summer Sublet. Beautiful tribute to a horrible tragedy. 8. @facun - Black Diamonds. Kickstarter book that will be a classic. Thank you all for continuing to follow PhotobookFinds. And for the messages and tags and even the books I’ve received. We reached 2,500 followers and hope to grow the community and get some other things going. Thank you. Enjoy the holidays. Keep your eyes peeled for photobook finds. . . . #photobookfinds #photobooks #artbooks #photobook #photobookjousting #photography #Photobooks2021 #bestphotobooks2021

Richard Avedon - Whitney Retrospective - Catalogue from the exhibit. I'm not typically a collector of ephemera but this catalogue from that exhibit just caught my attention. What a moment. Evidence 1944-1994, Avedon’s retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art, marked another high point in Avedon’s life as a photographer. Under the direction of David Ross, and curated in association with Jane Livingston, it was the first of his shows to travel both in the United St...ates to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and throughout Europe, with stops at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Palazzo Reale in Milan, and the National Portrait Gallery in London. This award-winning catalogue accompanied the show, with essays by Adam Gopnik and Jane Livingston. I picked this up at MAST Books in NYC for $15. They covered it in 2ml plastic which makes it feel more substantial and artifact-y. . . . #photobookfinds #photobooks #artbooks #photobook #photobookjousting #photography #ephemera #NY #Avedon #NyElite #WhitneyMuseum #RichatdAvedon See more
