Looking for an activity to do with your kids this weekend? How about a creative activity that can open up a discussion about this weekend’s Torah portion, Lech Lecha? Here’s what you can do: 1. See our post from Tuesday, 10/27 for a kid-friendly video that highlights Lech Lecha’s themes and story. 2. Join us for services and hear what the rabbi has to say about Lech Lecha. 3. Print out these illustrated story pages for your kids to have fun coloring.... 4. Then, enjoy talking to your littles about the importance of faith, the lessons you can learn from struggle, gifts that are answered in ways you do not expect, and the personal commitment it takes to make a pact and stick to it. Mindfulness and meditation can deepen your Shabbat experience. That’s why PJTC’s community holds a Shabbat morning meditation for its members after services. (We also have Tuesday & Wednesday morning meditations as well, for those who want a mid-week dose of mindfulness!) Want to learn more about how meditation can open up your Jewish soul? @MyJewishLearningCom wrote a great article on the subject: https://www.myjewishlearning.com//shabbat-and-meditation-/ Want to learn mo...re about PJTC’s meditation sessions? Since we are talking about Bris this week (the Yiddish word for Brit Milah (the Hebrew word for covenant)), let’s talk about the actual Bris ceremony that allows Jewish males to execute the physical representation of their commitment to their pact with God. For first time parents, it can be overwhelming. But remember that you have an entire community of fellow Jews who have gone through this before you, who can offer advice that will help you prepare for the big day and get ...through it with minimal sweat. If you are looking for a little Bris 101 reading, check out this @MyJewishLearningCom article, which tells you things like the only required foods at a Bris are wine/grape juice and bread for the blessings though lox and bagels are the go-to choice for feeding your guests, of course. https://www.myjewishlearning.com//the-brit-milah-bris-cer/ PJTC’s staff and clergy are always happy to walk you through it just reach out and let us know you need us! #synagogue #pasadena #pasadenasynagogue #bris #britmilah #bris101 Image from MyJewishLearning.com article

This week’s Parshat is Lech Lecha. It’s about Abraham’s covenant (pact) with God and his personal journey toward understanding, accepting and fulfilling the pact. Want to watch a 3-minute, family-friendly video that will help you understand the Torah portion’s story and themes? Having a path and a purpose can be a guiding light. A good way to set your own goals and find your direction is to take a look at the journeys of others and see what they have been able to accomplish. People just like you are capable of so much...just like you! Sticking your head in a book is nothing like sticking your head in the sand. There are many lessons and facts to learn from reading - especially when we come together to discuss the ideas in a book. This is exactly what the Jewish Federation is facilitating through their Jewish Book Festival, which starts November 1, 2020. Register at https://www.jewishsgpv.org to receive your Zoom info for the virtual book discussions.... #synagogue #pasadena #bookclub #jewishbooks #jewishbookclub #jewishbookfestival @jfedla

ROSH HODESH POEM By Rabbi Patti Haskell The moon withers to nothing In the night sky... As prayers for this new month Blossom with petals of hope. Every 29 or 30 days a new start. Freshly laundered days On which to place our marks: Tiptoeing, running, stepping forward. Songs of Hallel, praise To the Month Maker, Lead us on our first step forward Into the open spaces ahead. Subtle changes we anticipate As we unfold moment into week, Unwrapping the gift of new self To rewrap thirty days hence. Walk with me now, Step into the unknown, Sing with joy and wonder, Bless the path ahead. When you want to be an agent of change, having all of the information is critical. Hearing both sides of the argument, researching historical and current events surrounding the subject, and listening to experts share their first-hand knowledge are three important ways to gain this information. PJTC's special interest groups like Social Justice Committee, Interfaith Study Group, Adult Education Committee, Men's Club and Sisterhood often present events at which experts are shar...ing news and opinions about the topics and causes you care about. Keep an eye on our emails and calendar for upcoming events. https://www.pjtc.net/calendar.html Jewish organizations like the Jewish Federation also have highly informative programming, like TONIGHT'S Oct. 20 virtual town hall with Israeli Consul General, Dr. Hillel Newman. https://jewishsgpv.org @jewishsgpv #socialjustice #interfaithstudy #jewisheducation #mensclub #sisterhood
