If this older female patient presented to you with these two lesions in her mouth (and obviously poor oral hygiene), what important questions (or history) would you ask her and what things would you do next to arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan? UPDATE: Great comments!!! So most seem to think that medical history and lesion history are key here, and that’s generally a good rule with pathology....radiographs can be useful too since you can get them quickly and asses the ...underlying jawbone. Biopsy of course will be needed for definitive diagnosis, and as long as you can recognize this is not just due to poor oral hygiene and periodontal infection which could delay diagnosis you are ahead of the game! So here’s some pertinent medical history: patient had breast cancer (not specified which type).... and the biopsy findings from both lesions (which appeared similar histologically) are now attached here....any guesses at the presumptive diagnosis (without additional stains) based on this histopathology and history? And who do you refer the patient to now given these results? See more
Dear Colleagues here is this weeks Pathology post. This lesion is from a middle aged female. The patient has a long standing history of erosive lichen planus bilaterally involving the buccal mucosae. The tongue lesion is of recent onset and has not responded to topical steroid. The lesion was becoming painful. How would you describe this lesion and what is your differential? Swipe right for the histology! @ Oral Pathology Associates, Inc.
Great overview of the critical role of the pathologist!

27y/o Female presents with pain and swelling of the left posterior mandible. Describe the radiographic findings and give a differential diagnosis:
Time for another interesting case! 25 year old male presents with 2 week history of fluctuant swelling and limited opening. Treatment with antibiotic therapy did not resolve the lesion. Dental history is significant for third molar extractions and limited orthodontic therapy. Thoughts?
This lesion had been present for several months on this 54 year old female. What questions would you ask, describe the lesion and give a differential.
Here is a great example of one of the "5 P's". Can anybody remember all 5 entities in the differential diagnosis of this benign, gradually enlarging gingival nodule?
Just in time for Valentines day! Look at this heart-shaped radiolucency. Endodontic therapy of teeth #'s 8 and 9 did not resolve the lesion. Any ideas? Any comments?
Take a look at this panoramic radiograph! What other clinical features would you look for?
A great example of a rare condition. Anybody know what this represents!?
