The Ojai Arts Center has been a treasured part of the Ojai community for over 70 years. In 1939 the Ojai Art Center opened its doors as the Community Art Center of the Ojai Valley. Financed primarily by Dr. Charles Butler, a local physician who was the galvanizing force behind the idea to bring together independent arts groups into one community center. Half a block from the downtown Arcade, the Ojai Art Center at 113 S. Montgomery Street claims the distinction as the long...est continuously-operating multi-disciplinary center serving the arts in the State of California. In his dedication speech Dr. Butler instructed the community: You, who have made this center possible, must keep it alive, vital, and a force for good. This is a permanent insurance policy you have written for yourselves an insurance against the improper use of leisure time. But all insurance, as you know, must be paid for and the premium is not only your membership dues, which we hope you will pay in proportion to your means, but also your time, your interest, your no-longer-used possessions. April’s featured pro: Jane Weil Born and raised in St. Louis Missouri, Jane’s upbringing lead her to major in Theater at Northwestern University in Evanston. While working in New York for the Lincoln Center helping run theater productions and sets, she met Mark Weil, who soon became her husband. After a move to LA for more theater opportunities, they found Ojai on a recommendation from a friend. Mark was inspired by the Southern California tennis tournaments to open the Weil... Academy, and Jane became involved in the public school system as her three young boys joined the schools. Since then her achievements and passion for theater have propelled her to take on the role of COO of the Ojai Preforming Arts Theater. She couldn’t be more excited for this circle back to theater, her first passion, in the coming years! #weiltennisacademy #ojaitennis #theojaitennistournament #theojai #OjaiUSD #OPAT #Ojaivibes #ojaiquarterly See more

It's aways important to look beyond our little valley: That's exactly what Leslie Clark, the founder of the NOMAD foundation has done for over 30 years. In 2019 we featured Leslie as her beloved store on Ojai Ave closed its doors. The NOMAD foundation hopes to bring awareness and support to the nomadic Tuareg and Wodaabe times of Niger. The foundation has created the Tamesna Center for Nomadic Life, built along the nomadic trails. Starting in 2008, it had expanded to provide:... "a medical center, adult education center with midwife training, earth-bag building training, solar fabrication training programs, a boarding school, nurses residence, vaccination corals, fenced garden and latrines" (information from the nomadfoundation.org) The list continues, as does the story, in the Summer 2019 OQ. It may not be Christmas anymore, but did it involve clogged plumbing, semi-remodeled houses, two bearded collies, and some... facility envy? Read Ilona Saari's Christmas in Connecticut online at: https://www.ojaihub.com/christmas-in-connecticut/

In honor of Chuck Graham's new Carrizo Plain National Monument book, here is a brief excerpt of his story from the OQ Fall 2020. "The ears were a dead giveaway. As the morning sun warmed the upper Cuyama River watershed, it was the large, backlit ears of a San Joaquin kit fox (Vulpes macrotis mutica) that caught my eye from the edge of the gravel bar in the dry arroyo. ... They might be considered the smallest canid on the North American mainland, but it's their ears that gi...ve them a distinct advantage in terms of survival. In fact, their hearing is legendary in the fox world." Illustration by Fuu J #ojai #ojaiquartery #Carrizo #nationalmonument #kitfoxes
