20 years ago today CHP Oceanside lost a hero. In the early morning hours of 10/28/2000 Sean Nava, ID 12890, was collecting evidence from a crash when he was struck and killed by a DUI driver. Officer Nava’s family stopped by today to honor their missing hero. Melanie, Alex and Patrick, your Oceanside family will never forget. As time heals some wounds, this wound will never heal. Driving under the influence continues to be a problem. DUI is a choice. There are to ma...ny stories like the Sean Nava story. DUI is preventable, all it takes is a plan...designated driver, ride share, taxi, stay put... no one should have to lose family like the Nava family did. Sadly there are many stories, all due to someone making the wrong choice. Please make good choices behind the wheel...have a plan...get home safe...that is everyone’s goal. Officer Nava we miss you. #dontdrinkanddrive #chpoceanside #chp

Good morning North County! The forecast for the next couple of days has the possibility of some high wind in our area. High winds increase our fire threat so remember if you need to pull your off the roadway make sure you are not over any brush or vegetation. Many fires are started by cars pulled over or close to the brush that borders many of our roadways. Stay safe all! Monday morning dad joke... ... Cop pulled me over and said PAPERS...... I yelled SCISSORS! and drove off.... (Don’t do that by the way...) Have a great week! #chpoceanside #chp #californiahighwaypatrol

Today, after over 38 years with the California Highway Patrol, Commissioner Warren Stanley has announced his retirement effective November 17, 2020. He has expr...essed his gratitude to Governor Newsom, and his staff, for the years of partnership and support. He would also like to thank the public for the opportunity to serve you all. Finally, he would like to congratulate Deputy Commissioner Amanda Ray on her appointment to Commissioner on November 17, 2020. Deputy Commissioner Ray has been a pioneer for women in law enforcement as the first female in the CHP’s 91-year history to hold the position of Commissioner for the nation’s largest state police agency. Throughout her career, she has actively engaged with the communities she serves, seeking every opportunity to participate in outreach events, and active involvement in departmental programs to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security to the people of California.

Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, ahead of any type of injury, disease, or violence. The CHP is partnering with the National Highwa...y Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to encourage parents and guardians to discuss driver safety with their young drivers. Discussions about safe driving include avoiding distractions such as cell phones, using seat belts, obeying speed limits, not driving impaired, and limiting the number of passengers. The CHP provides free education to help keep teen drivers alive in its Start Smart course, offered by all CHP offices. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, classes are being held online. Contact your local CHP Area office for information on how to enroll: https://www.chp.ca.gov/find-an-office

Oceanside Officers were recently called to a neighborhood after a complaint about dirt bikes cruising the streets. Please remember you are not allowed to ride off-road all terrain vehicles or motorcycles on public roadways. The 15 year old rider of this motorcycle received a citation and a call to his mom to come and get him and the bike. Mixing cars and ATVs on our roadways is not safe. Please ride in appropriate areas. ... #chpoceanside #chp #ridesafe #gotothedesert #madneighbors

Happy Monday North County! Safety, Service and Security is always our goal... yes that means issuing citations for traffic violations. If you are stopped by one of our officers safely pull over to the right, or if you are near an exit go ahead and exit and find a safe place to stop. In general we like to exit the freeway during a traffic stop to increase safety for ourselves and the person we are stopping. Stay safe all! ... Monday Dad joke... . When I was little my parents always fed me alphabet soup. They said I liked it... . . They were putting words in my mouth... #chpoceanside #chp #californiahighwaypatrol
