"I always tell people that I became a writer not because I went to school but because my mother took me to the library. I wanted to become a writer so I could s...ee my name in the card catalog." -- Sandra Cisneros A Mighty Girl wishes a happy birthday to author Sandra Cisneros! Cisneros earned a place as a prominent voice in Chicana literature with her acclaimed works "The House on Mango Street," "Woman Hollering Creek," and "Caramelo." As the only daughter in a poverty-stricken family of six brothers in Chicago, Cisneros often felt isolated growing up, a feeling exacerbated by her extended family members' continuous migration between Mexico and the United States. The experience, she said, was like "always straddling two countries ... but not belonging to either culture." Her work draws heavily from her childhood experience, dealing primarily with growing up in poverty, her struggle against patriarchal constraints, and her experience of being Chicana in an Anglo-American culture. Her most famous work, The House on Mango Street, is a series of vignettes about a young Latina girl coming-of-age in Chicago, striving to discover who she will become -- for ages 14 and up at at https://www.amightygirl.com/the-house-on-mango-street For books for all ages starring Latina Mighty Girls, visit our blog post "60 Empowering Books Starring Latina Mighty Girls" at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=13062 If you'd like to encourage your kids' interest in creative writing, there are several excellent guides for young writers: "Writing Magic: Creating Stories That Fly" for ages 8 to 12 (https://www.amightygirl.com/writing-magic), "Spilling Ink: A Young Writer’s Handbook" for ages 9 to 14 (https://www.amightygirl.com/spilling-ink), and "Dear Ally, How Do You Write a Book?" for ages 13 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/dear-ally) Image credit: Esmeralda Contreras

Kate loves to read young adult and children's books, especially those that have a dash of humor. Her favorite books are hilarious and heartbreaking all at once.... Kate is especially drawn to contemporary, humor and mystery/thriller in these age groups (and as an avid Nancy Drew fan, especially mystery!). On the adult side, she mostly enjoys true crime. Ask Kate what to read next! https://bit.ly/2EFl7pG See more
