To treat a cavity your dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then "fill" the area on the tooth where the decayed material was removed. Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down from misuse (such as from nail-biting or tooth grinding). Today, several dental filling materials are available. Teeth can be filled with gold; porcelain; silver amalgam (which consists of mercury mixed with silver, tin, zinc, and cop...per); or tooth-colored, plastic, and materials called composite resin fillings. There is also a material that contains glass particles and is known as glass ionomer. This material is used in ways similar to the use of composite resin fillings. Turn Toothbrushing Time Into Family Time In the hectic happenings of everyday life, parents are often looking for ways to squeeze in extra moments here and there to spend time with their kids. They just grow up so fast! But between work, making meals, grocery shopping, etc., it can be hard to find a spot in the schedule for more family time. Here's some good news you already have an activity in the routine that can be turned into a family activity toothbrushing time! G...etting the family together Whether your children are infants or older, practicing your oral hygiene routine together has lots of benefits. If you can manage it, get the whole family together! Or maybe rotate out different members of the family as "brushing buddies" so everyone gets a chance to be together throughout the week. Children look up to the people in their lives, be it parents, caretakers, or siblings, and learn lifelong habits from them. Instead of having brushing their teeth become a time they hate (a feeling that could stick with them!) taking steps to make it a fun family activity could turn it into an enjoyable experience they actually look forward to. Have you got knocked out tooth? DO NOT throw it away. Act quickly, within 30 minutes, and visit the nearest dentist or endodontist. Review and remember these tooth-saving steps that take you and your tooth from the time it falls out until you reach medical support:... 1. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface) NOT the root. Locate the tooth immediately; don't leave it at the site of the accident. Handle the tooth carefully when you pick it up, and never touch the root of the tooth, only the crown (chewing surface). 2. If dirty, gently rinse the tooth with water. Use only water to gently rinse off any dirt. Do not use soap or chemicals. Don’t scrub or dry the tooth, and don’t wrap the tooth in a tissue or cloth. 3. Reposition the tooth in the socket immediately, if possible. Try to put the tooth back into its socket right away. Gently push it in with your fingers, by handling the crown, or position it above the socket and close your mouth slowly. Hold the tooth in place with your fingers or by gently biting down on it. 4. Keep the tooth moist at all times. The tooth must stay moist at all times, either in your mouth or, if it can’t be replaced in the socket, put it in milk, in your mouth next to your cheek. Don’t use regular tap water; root surface cells can’t tolerate that for extended periods of time. 5. See an endodontist or dentist within 30 minutes of the injury. Bring the tooth with you to your emergency appointment ideally. It's best to see the doctor within 30 minutes; however, it is possible to save a tooth even if it has been outside the mouth for an hour or more. Continuing the topic of dental emergencies following are a list of suggested things you can do at home help ease any pain or discomfort caused by a dental emergency: Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a mug of boiling water and use it as a warm mouthwash to relieve irritation and reduce swelling. If you have a tooth knocked out, put it in a glass of milk until you can get to your dentist. Floss! If you are experiencing pain surrounding one specific tooth, it is possible that some...thing has gotten stuck between your teeth or inside the gum tissue. Use a cold compress to help reduce swelling, numb irritation, and stop any bleeding that may occur. Swish with Hydrogen Peroxide to help kill bacteria and alleviate irritation. Take the prescribed dose of an over-the-counter pain medication to help alleviate any discomfort. Book an appointment! www.newagedentaldrsorkin.com [email protected] (661) 799-1991
