I had the opportunity to tour a maximum security prison this morning and speak to some of the prisoners. A few thoughts/observations: As someone who is deeply e...nsconced in the online self-improvement world of "life hacking" and "self-actualizing," arguably the people who need the greatest psychological boost and life skill maintenance are those with the least access to it. There's famous psych research by Carol Dweck showing the difference between a "growth" mindset vs a "fixed" mindset. A growth mindset is when someone believes they can change and improve. A fixed mindset is when someone believes they are stuck being who they are. People with a growth mindset tend to change and improve and become successful at much higher rates than people with a fixed mindset. It goes back to the "Prime Belief" I write about, where the most important belief before all others is the belief that growth/change is possible. Without that belief, not much else matters. Currently, we have a prison system largely based on a fixed mindset regarding criminals--that these are inherently deficient and broken individuals who must be sequestered and isolated from society. Very few prisons in the US offer vocational training, college courses, arts programs, etc. The recidivism rate (how many get arrested again and return to jail) for prisoners who graduate from these programs is 4%. The recidivism rate for the general prison population is 43%. Prison education drops recidivism from 43% to 4% -- that is staggering. The improvement is not simply about giving prisoners job skills either. It's more important than that. It gives them hope. It gives them a clear path back into society. It generates a culture of healthy ambition within the prison population. It's about giving these men and women a growth mindset. A prisoner told me today that it wasn't until he was in jail for 4-5 years that he finally realized that *he* could control the trajectory of his own life. He's currently finishing up his master's degree as well as a 20-year sentence. He'll be more credentialed than I am when he gets out next year. Granted, not all of them will take the opportunities, but the warden told me today that all of their educational programs have waiting lists 2-4 years long. The demand is there. A guard told me that the programs have transformed the entire culture there. The most respected guys in the prison are the ones with college degrees, not the ones who sell the most dope or killed the most people. That wasn't the case 10 years ago, he said. I know none of this is new to anyone who is familiar with prison reform issues. But I figured it was worth using my online bullhorn to spread the word today. Thanks for listening.
At a very young age, I was burdened with heavy responsibilities in caring for my younger siblings. I struggled in school because I was so tired I just wanted t...o sleep. My teachers were always frustrated with me because I never completed my homework, Rachel De Vaughan says. Read more about this adult learner success story: See more
