A New Report on Indigenous Peoples Reveals Voting Habits TULSA, Okla. When Native voters go to the polls on Election Day, they will do so feeling their priorities are not being adequately addressed, with a lack of trust in the U.S. government and feelings of uncertainty about the direction of the country. These findings were part of the Indigenous Futures Survey released last week by IllumiNative, Native Organizers Alliance and the Center for Native American Youth.... The community-driven data from the survey provides key insights into the motivations, experiences, and changing beliefs of Native communities to correct inaccurate portrayals and misconceptions about tribal communities.

Indigenous Knowledge Revives Ancient Clam Garden Practices LA CONNER, Wash. Tribal communities are reviving 3,500-year-old eco-friendly practices to create sustainable beaches along the Pacific Northwest Coast. Teams of tribal members and scientists in the U.S. and Canada have scouted various locations that are ideal areas for shellfish, like clams, and other small marine life to nestle and flourish in what is referred to as clam gardens. The concept is to build rock walls... near low tidemarks, which in turn traps sediment and sand to create terraces to cultivate intertidal ecosystems. These sanctuaries encourage sea creature growth and development in shallow coastal waters. This knowledge of marine care was passed down through generations of Pacific Coast tribes, with the earliest rocky coastal remnants dating back 3,500 years on Quadra Island in British Columbia. The clam gardens were used as food production and food security for Indigenous populations. While not as widespread of a practice as it once was, many are finding its significance and relevance when it comes to combating the effects of climate change.

Crossing Paths brings together Native and Indigenous graduate and undergraduate students to share their research and get feedback from the community. Crossing Paths is the only event on Berkeley's campus that offers a space for all Native and Indigenous students to engage in exchange and learning. This event includes presentations from Gabriel Trujillo, second-year PhD student in Integrative Biology, and Royale Pinassi, second-year undergrad student in Conservation and Resour...ce Studies. Both presentations engage in an exploration of the relationships between Indigenous peoples and plants. The event is moderated by Roxy Cruz, PhD, who recently graduated from IB and is now a postdoc in ESPM. Gabriel is sharing a talk titled "The indigenous and evolutionary importance of Hahlu (Buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis)" and Royale will share a talk titled "Karuk Agroecosytem Resilience Initiative: Botanical focused research and herbarium specimen administration." This event is sponsored by Native American Student Development and the American Indian Graduate Program. You can join the event here: www.tinyurl.com/crossing-paths-RG
