The #genomeproject took 13 years to identify the 20,000 plus genes and sequence of all 3 billion genome bases. This project was billions of dollars globally, but today’s #biotechnology companies utilize the #BigData database that can decode entire genomes for just thousands of dollars. Robert Wilson grew up in the tiny farming community of Geneva, Nebraska, and graduated from Lincoln High in 1955. In his senior year, he was named a Harvard National Scholar, one of only 100 such scholarships awarded that year. Robert ultimately settled in Palo Alto, California at Stanford University, where I had the privilege of photographing him for the Stanford Graduate School of Business. I recently found out that he and his former doctoral student, Paul Milgrom, just won... the 2020 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for their work on Auction Theory and the Development of New Auction Markets. Robert Wilson has previously mentored two other doctoral students at Stanford who also went on to become Nobel Laureates. I had the pleasure of photographing both gentlemen for the Stanford Graduate School of Business and am honored that my portrait of Paul Milgrom is used in his book on auction design. This story of long time mentorship and collaboration is incredible - it started in the 70s when Milgrom was Wilson's graduate student.
