MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY A heart of gold and a drive to work hard, Laura walked into my studio a few years ago and on her first session got sick 25 minutes into the workout. Completely unintentionally on my part! I thought I lost my opportunity to work with her forever, but at the end of the session she said Well clearly I need to do this again. Food for thought: If a client is very ill or even just sees a doctor regularly- they have about 2hrs/YEAR total time WITH the doctor, in which most people had to wait 2-3months for the visit from time of scheduling. On the other hand trainers like myself, get to see those individuals 2x/week for a total of 75-100hrs/YEAR. That makes us a front line provider whether we want to be or not. Bone loss effects us all, but impacts those that have gone through chemo so much more Based on a study done @danafarber and Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston, in just ONE year 35 women treated with chemotherapy had a decrease in bone density of 7% at the spine and 4% at the hip compared with the 1-2% a year with normal menopause. As we celebrate Global Cat Day, here's a quiz. What do our feline friends and Joseph Pilates have in common? Answer: A flexible spine! The founder of Pilates shared this wisdom: You're only as old as your spine. If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young. Cats are so agile because their spine is able to rotate more than most other animals, and their vertebrae have a special, flexible, elastic cushioning on the disks, which gives it even more flexibility. A flexible spine is also why cats can run so fast (nearly 30 mph!) and be so graceful. While we don't have the anatomy of our cats, we can definitely use them as inspiration and develop more flexibility in our spine with thoughtful exercise like Pilates.
