The 2021 Student of the Year Award goes to CATHERINE LAI, a senior at Ann Sobrato High School. Her teachers describe her as a talented, focused, reliable and responsible student, viewing school as an opportunity for growth and self-enrichment. She is a Junior Auxiliary Volunteer at a local hospital and member/officer in Sobrato’s Red Cross Club. As President of the Peer Tutoring Program, she has been instrumental in coordinating, recruiting, training and managing over 25 ...tutors and 40 students twice weekly, all via ZOOM! Catherine has a passion for biology and understanding the human body, which has led her to position herself for a career as an Orthodontist or Obstetrician. Although she enjoys the technical elements, Catherine is also genuinely interested in caring for people with empathy and kindness. Catherine’s GPA is 4.5, among the highest at the school which is ranked in the top 7% of high schools in the state and nation. She achieved a score of 670 on the math portion of the SAT when she was in EIGHTH GRADE and was the recipient of the John Hopkins Center High Honors Award for Talented Youth. It goes without saying, that Catherine will excel in her academic endeavors but she will also be a focused, hardworking and compassionate member of whatever community she finds herself in. GARY PALACIOS is selected as the 2021 Volunteer of the Year! For the past 10 years, Gary Palacios has been the man behind the scenes and the success of feeding, clothing and gifting holiday toys to thousands of people in need in Morgan Hill. He says that he saw the need early on during his time as Cathedral of Faith Morgan Hill’s Campus Pastor. After designing a monthly food donation program through the church, in 2012 Gary and volunteers began serving meals to those... most in need. The program started out feeding 15 people and quickly grew to 75 thanks to Gary’s outreach efforts which also included the creation of a program at Village Avanti Apartments called It’s a new day at the village, providing hot meals, groceries and games to apartment residents. However, for Gary Palacios it wasn’t enough. With the help of Martha’s Kitchen and Cathedral of Faith, the initial food service program was relocated to the Community and Cultural Center where it quickly expanded to serve 500+ people every quarter. Gary created the popular I Love Morgan Hill social media page in 2012 encouraging the entire community to become involved and play a role in feeding and clothing those in need in Morgan Hill. Above and beyond the efforts listed above, Gary spearheads a Summer Backpack and Hot Meal Drive through I Love Morgan Hill and a Family Harvest Meal (in conjunction with Cathedral of Faith, Reaching Out & 2nd Harvest Food Bank) the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month which feeds over 200 families. In 2019 during Christmastime alone, Gary’s program served 1,500 people with toys, jackets, a hot meal and a bag of groceries. He loves Morgan Hill and encourages our entire community to not only see the need but be a part of meeting it. With the educational programs they manage and the tourism spotlight generated for each city, they are not only giving back to the community that gives so much to them but also promoting the art of filmmaking as a viable career choice for every generatio...n. PJIFF is an all-volunteer, mission-driven non-profit organization that focuses on inclusive, diverse, women-empowered films and offers 7 educational programs year-round to the community for free. The first Poppy Jasper Film Festival was held in 2004 by founder Bill Leaman and Festival Director Kim Bush. Throughout the years the festival has been directed by Bob Snow, Donna Brodsky, Tedd Faraone and more, each adding their own unique spin and vision to the program. April 2021 will mark the 16th year anniversary of the festival and the 4th year for Festival Director Mattie Scariot. Since 2018 PJIFF has grown to an 8-day film festival taking place in the downtown communities of Morgan Hill, San Martin, Gilroy, Hollister, and San Juan Bautista. Festival events include a scheduled tour of local wineries, a review of local films and a day at Gavilan College to focus on Youth and Student film submissions. In 2019 PJIFF featured filmmakers from 8 different countries, 5 states, Northern and Southern California. PJIFF will be pivoting in 2021 to a 14-day hybrid (live/online) festival April 7th - 20th where they will be screening over 200 films (50% directed by women) from 38 countries. They will also be showcasing the beautiful region we live in by having local businesses, wineries, and event spaces help announce all of the filmmaker and community achievement awards which will have international coverage. Yesterday, we surprised owner Hamdey Altayyeb with the announcement that MY PIZZA had been awarded the 2021 SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR! We all know the business for their delicious pizza but little has been said about Hamdey's behind the scenes support of our community. Hamdey opened my Pizza 25 years ago and his longest standing employees to date have been there for 21 years and 16 years respectively. He states that what he does for the community he does through the co...mmunity. The dollars residents spend at My Pizza are invested back into the community through pizza donations for the most in need and FREE business support tools for other local struggling small businesses. Since the pandemic began, Hamdey has been reaching out to local business owners offering to assist with online marketing campaigns and targeted/boosted Facebook Posts, all of which he pays for out of pocket. Earlier this year Hamdey donated pizzas to fire fighters and has also donated countless rounds of pizzas to first responders, the homeless, the families of Cecelia’s Closet and those most in need in our community. He walks around with business cards in his pocket, marked on the backside with free pizzas, so he can offer a meal wherever he goes. It is no wonder why he gains the respect and confidence of his employees, as he is devoted to their personal and professional success, offering competitive wages, vacation, financial assistance and most recently a matching 401K account. There was not a dry eye in the house when we surprised the 2021 Educator of the Year Veronica Andrade, an English Teacher at Central High School and Communications Teacher at Gavilan College. She is affectionately known as an out of the box educator because of the investment she makes in her students both inside and outside the classroom. Veronica is not only an educator, but a mentor, a counselor, a coach, a confident and most importantly a friend to her students.
