FOR THOSE IN THE 805: Reminder on making phone calls! On May 25, 2017 the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved a new 820 area code that will be an overlay of the existing 805 area code. An area code overlay adds a second area code to a geographic region. Existing subscribers will retain their 805 area code and telephone numbers; however, subscribers must dial the area code for all calls to and from numbers within the 805 and new 820 area codes. New telephon...e numbers with the 820 area code will start to be issued in June 2018. Permissive dialing period: December 1, 2017 to June 2, 2018 Subscribers may dial 7-digits or 1+10-digits within the 805 area, but if you dial 7-digits you will hear an announcement reminding you to dial 1+10-digits. From our City phone switch: 9+1+10 digits. After the Permissive dialing period: This Saturday June 2, 2018 All calls, even local calls must dial (1+10-digits): 1+area code + 7-digits within the 805 area. From our City phone system: 9+1+10 digits. Tips to prepare for the upcoming area code overlay: Contact security or alarm vendors to update dial-up numbers to avoid a break in security routines and contacts. Reprogram equipment or features i.e., Fax preset speed-dials, automatic dial, speed-dial, call forwarding, modems for computer, etc., programmed to dial seven digits to dial "1+ area code + telephone number. Update items like stationery, checks, etc., to include your area code + telephone number. Start thinking of dialing 1 + the area code + telephone number for all calls. Advise families, friends etc., to dial 1 + the area code + telephone number for all calls. Provide your area code + telephone number, not just the telephone number, as needed. When asking for someone else’s number, remember to ask for the area code too. Remember that the 805 area code and the new 820 area code will co-exist within the same geographic region.
