One year ago today #GeorgeFloyd was murdered. Much remains undone. Let us not forget, let us not remain silent, let us continue to fight for justice.... Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow (Isaiah 1:17, NIV). #BlackLivesMatter

MHUCC is offering a 3rd group on Waking Up to Race, in which we will explore the meaning of white privilege & our relationship to race. Join us TONIGHT for a brief zoom orientation meeting at 7:00 pm to talk about the group and answer any questions. The group will meet for 4 weeks beginning Thursday, October 29th at 7:00pm. The co-leaders will be Gail Rutherford and Walter Borschel. Comment below to get zoom details for tonight's meeting!... There are many books on white supremacy and anti-racism, but Waking Up White by Debby Irving is good place to start . It's the book we will be using. Here are Gail’s words about her experience in the group: Until reading this book I never really thought about my place in the racial world. This book provided a structure to examine my life and beliefs, both now and growing up, in a very concrete way. It was helpful to be led in reflection and discussion by the questions the author poses at the end of each chapter. Being able to share my experiences in a safe environment, even when I felt uncomfortable, helped me to really understand my experiences and changed how I'm viewing the world today. Join us!

Thank you, Gloria Schacht, for all you're terrific work in the MHUCC nursery. Gloria grew up around Los Angeles, and found herself helping with taking care of kids even when she was very young. She started working at MHUCC when her son was three years old. Gloria comes in for work about 30 minutes before church starts, and stays for half an hour after services. She heard about this position from Elizabeth Quinones. What she enjoys most about her job is meeting family members and discovering the varied personalities of the little ones.

Thank you, soprano, Angelica Eclar. We're thrilled you're with us! Angelica Eclar grew up in Loma Linda, in the Los Angeles area. She says she had been interested in singing since she was practically a baby, and she was singing for her church already by ages two and three. Angelica love it! She first heard about the UCC job when she subbed in the soprano section. In the past she also sang with a group called Full Measure, which did things like Christmas caroling, including at the Hotel Del in Coronado. She especially likes the camaraderie that goes with working with the church choir. https://youtu.be/c4dVEWIVHSQ

Thank you, Joseph Grienenberger, Mission Hills UCC bass section lead! We're grateful for you. James grew up in Fullerton. He first began to develop an interest in music in tenth grade in high school, after he had shown an interest in drama. He was encouraged to develop that interest by his high school choir director. He got the UCC position after getting a call to apply from Max Chodos; they had known each other since 1980, when they had been in a show together. From 1982 until last year James sang with the chorus of the San Diego Opera, a job he enjoyed a great deal. https://youtu.be/4SkFbrdjrMI

Much gratitude to James Roth, our MHUCC choir tenor lead. We appreciate you! James has been with the choir for over 10 years, and is therefore the senior member of the section corps. He says he was born with a natural talent for music, starting with playing musical instruments in elementary school in his hometown of Archbold, Ohio. He was singing with the San Diego Master Chorale when he heard an announcement about the position at Mission Hills UCC and applied. What James likes best about his job is working with and supporting other section members to produce good music. https://youtu.be/G9mTzeJFZJU

Thank you to our talented alto section leader, Saige Afalava! Saige is from Oceanside. She became interested in singing when four years old, and by the time she was six Saige was performing in front of audiences. Early in her High School years Saige was encouraged to further develop her musical talents by fellow section leader Angelica Eclar. She found out about the UCC position through Angelica, as she used to come to choir rehearsals with her. She loves the fact that on this job she is constantly learning new things. https://youtu.be/-S_YF4Lxkjg

A heartfelt thank you to Andrea Mays White - soprano section leader - for all you give to MHUCC. Andrea is a San Diego native who became interested in music when she was very young. She was encouraged to sing particularly by a high school English teacher when she was about 13 years old. She was told of the UCC job by Max Chodosthey had gone to college together, and he sang at her wedding! She does not currently sing with any other group, but sang with the San Diego Opera for no less than 31 years. What she loves best about her job in helping others to feel more secure about their singing. https://youtu.be/_jLZyhGH4oU
