ALTERNATIVE VERSION OF THE JACK-O-LANTERN LEGEND Why has the scary pumpkin face become a symbol of Halloween? Most people know the Jack-O-Lantern legend, but only few have heard of an alternate version. Jack was the name of a court executioner in one old town. He did his job well and was an artist in the depth of his heart and dreamed of as many spectators as possible to come to see the executions that he was carrying out. He resorted to an ingenious trick to attract the crow...d. Jack had a real human skull, left over from a useless vagabond, whose remains were not sought after by relatives. He lit a candle inside this hollow head and put this peculiar lantern on the windowsill of his room on the evening before the execution. Eye sockets and a mouth with crooked teeth appeared on the wall of the house opposite. The eerie grin of death, created by shadows and lights, attracted the attention of passers-by. After several executions, people got used to the executioner informing about the upcoming execution in this way. Years later when Jack retired, people tried to imitate his advertising installation, but they didn't have a human skull and replaced it with a pumpkin. It was associated with a kind of dark entertainment and eventually became a traditional decoration of Halloween. Medieval Torture Museum inST. AUGUSTINE, FL Halloween 30% OFF for combo ticket! HAND BRANDING This torture was used in England, 1642-1649 to permanently stamp or tattoo army deserters or criminals. This hand-shaped example was made by the British Army during the English Civil War (1641-1651). The branding tool bears the initials ‘CR’ surrounding a crown. This is presumed to refer to ‘Carolus Rex’ - King Charles I. He was beheaded in 1649 for treason, after which England briefly became a republic after a decade of civil war. This tool would have been use...d to mark ‘ownership’ of Royalist army deserters. The metal spikes on the hand are blunt. Perhaps they are dulled through use or perhaps it is deliberate to inflict more pain. However, they were likely heated first to burn the imprint onto the victim. Branding was abolished in 1829 with the exception of army deserters. The mark was then tattooed on the body, not branded with irons. The practice was totally abandoned in 1879.

MEDIEVAL MASKS OF SHAME Shame masks were a type of embarrassing punishment device used in Europe during the middle ages until 18th century. They were usually made of cold, unyielding metal, and the masks were created in various mortifying designs. While the heavy mask was certainly tortuous, the main point of the practice was to humiliate the offender as much as possible. Consequently, the masks were often made to look or sound silly and give folks an idea of the individual’s... sin. For instance, some had donkey ears to signify a fool, long tongues to represent a gossiper, or giant pig noses to indicate the person was dirty. Some even made whistling sounds every time the wearer exhaledmuch to the amusement of onlookers. On top of that, the criminal was then pushed into the stocks where they were subjected to the taunts, jeers, and possibly rotten tomatoes of passersby. Some of the masks also had an iron bit, which pressed uncomfortably down on the tongue of the offender. The goal of schandmaskes was quite simple: punish and ridicule the offender so as to control the behavior. Townspeople looking at people wearing such masks, or participating in humiliating activities such as "riding the stang," would certainly get the message. Don't gossip. Don't be a pig. Know your place. Reinforcing cultural norms and expectations was certainly important enough to Europeans to develop such strange methods. The question is: did they really work?
