Rental Housing scam. As a property manager, I advertise on Zillow, Trulia, and Hotpads. If it is a multi unit, I advertise on Apartments.com I do not do craigslist, as it seems to be a source of scam. I have seen my listings show up on craigslist, with an out of country phone number. Along with the number, comes a story of why. Be aware! There is not one process that will prevent all scams, but here are a few tips that may help in protecting your information and money.... 1. Always walk through the property with the person you are in contact with. A drive by does not accomplish this task. 2. Check out the person, to make sure they manage or own the property. 3. Do not complete an application and hand it over without doing the above. 4. Do not send money, any amount, to anyone without doing the above. Do your do-diligence and make sure and validate the person before you give your information and money away. These steps will not guaranty success, but will help.
