Did you know that California was the first state in the nation to establish a state park? Yosemite became the first state park after President Abraham Lincoln granted the land in 1864. It became Yosemite National Park, as we know it today, in 1906. It is in California’s first State Park where some of the world’s first Park Rangers worked. These Park Rangers were actually six segregated regiments of the U.S. Army, created in 1866. They were later consolidated into 4 regiments... consisting of the 9th and 10th Calvary and the 24th and 25th infantry. Nicknamed the Buffalo Soldiers, they were given this name by the Cheyenne and other Plains Native Americans who drew a resemblance between the soldier’s dark curly hair, and the thick fur nestled between buffalos’ horns. To learn more about the Buffalo Soldiers check out this amazing video by Yosemite National Park Ranger, Shelton Johnson, linked below: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CKxNkc6gV12/ : 24th Infantry conducting a mounted patrol of Yosemite in 1899. Did you hear campgrounds were open?! Repost @castateparks ... With the Regional Stay at Home Order lifted for all regions in the state, below is an update on accessing the State Park System: Campground sites are reopening for existing reservation holders. Other state campground sites will be reopened for new reservations using a phased approach starting today (Jan. 28). Not all campground sites are open to the public due to the pandemic, wildfire impacts and other issues. Group campsites remain closed. Day use outdoor areas of park units currently open to the public remain open. It is critical that Californians continue to recreate responsibly in the outdoors as the pandemic is far from over -- stay local, plan ahead to find out what is open, wear a face covering, practice physical distancing and avoid gatherings with people outside the immediate household. Today’s #wildlifeweekend is on the move! This crawling critter is the Pinacate Beetle, commonly known as the stink bug, stink beetle, or clown beetle. It’s gets its multitude of names for a number of reasons! Pinacate comes from the Aztec word, Pinacatl, meaning black beetle. Stink bug or stink beetle, comes from its characteristic trait of raising it’s bum and emitting an odorous secretion to deter predators. Clown beetle refers to the way this beetle raises itself in a headstand when it feels threatened. Have you seen one of these before, and what name do you know it by? #leocarrillostatepark #castateparksangeles #stinkbug #stinkbeetle #pinacatebeetle #eleodes #californiastateparks #onthemove
