Program Day #1: Local Government and Civic Innovation. It was the Class of 2020's first big day out in the city. The class started out on the 17th floor of San Jose City Hall to hear from Vice Mayor, Chappie Jones and City Manager, Dave Sykes. They also got to spend some time with the City of San Jose's Budget Director, Jim Shannon. Jim put the class through a simulation where they had to pretend they were managing the city's budget. After that, they got an exclusive tour of both the Council Chambers and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library!

Congratulations to our Leadership San Jose graduates! Class of 2019. These 35 individuals are now part of our legacy alumni network, made up of now 880+ alumni who have been empowered to be catalysts for change within their community. The SVO through Leadership San Jose, has offered these individuals a platform to connect with one another and learn how to engage within their communities at a deeper level. By completing this program, our graduates are furthering their impact ...with the city they call home. They have renewed their commitment to our community. Their civic engagement is the key to making communities work. Their graduation is not the end. It’s a beginning, and there’s a lot of work to be done. So, class of 2019? What kind of community do you want to build and see for the future generations?

For our last Leadership San Jose program day we brought in three admirable community leaders to inspire the class about volunteerism, giving back and becoming a board member! Each of them really gave our cohort members a clear sense of what civic engagement is and how they can stay connected with the community even after they all graduate. Thank you to the following panelists for sharing your wisdom with our class:... Megan Fluke, Executive Director, Committee for Green Foothills Ashley Raggio, Director, Doing Good Together Christopher Manning, Commissioner, Santa Clara County Historic Heritage Commission.
