Sunday is the beginning of National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) 2021! This video provides a brief overview of what crisis centers do to support victims of crime. Things You Can Do to Prevent Child Abuse Volunteer your time. Become a CASA and be a child’s voice! Educate yourself and others. Join the Parenting Program at Lassen Family Services and learn how to positively support your children!... Teach children their rights. When children are taught they are special and have the right to be safe, they are less likely to think abuse is their fault, and more likely to report an offender. Support prevention programs. Too often, intervention occurs only after abuse is reported. Greater investments are needed in programs that have been proven to stop the abuse before it occurs. Know what child abuse is. Physical and sexual abuse clearly constitute maltreatment, but so does neglect, or the failure of parents or other caregivers to provide a child with needed food, clothing, and care. Children can also be emotionally abused when they are rejected, berated, or continuously isolated. Know the signs. Unexplained injuries aren't the only signs of abuse. Depression, fear of a certain adult, difficulty trusting others or making friends, sudden changes in eating or sleeping patterns, inappropriate sexual behavior, poor hygiene, secrecy, and hostility are often signs of family problems and may indicate a child is being neglected or physically, sexually, or emotionally abused. Invest in kids. Encourage leaders in the community to be supportive of children and families. According to the CDC, sexual violence (SV) impacts health in many ways and can lead to short and long-term physical and mental health problems. Below are a few ways we can prevent SV and the negative affects that follow. Parents, school staff, other caring adults can: Teach skills to prevent SV. Help youth build positive communication skills, including conflict resolution and how to handle emotions in a healthy way.... Practice and model healthy, safe dating and intimate relationships in order to teach youth dating and relationship skills. Promote healthy sexuality by discussing topics like sexual behavior, sexual communication, respect, and consent. Schools and workplaces can: Create protective environments. Improve safety and monitoring in schools by addressing areas where students feel less safe, identifying safe spaces and staff support for students, and create an atmosphere of intolerance for harassment and violence. Establish and apply proactive workplace sexual harassment prevention policies and procedures that include commitment from top management, zero tolerance, notification to applicants and new hires of harassment-free environments, regular organizational assessments, and consistent, specific training to reduce workplace SV behaviors. Everyone can: Promote social norms that protect against violence. Speak up against sexist language or behaviors that promote violence. Offer to help or support in situations where violence may occur or has occurred Support survivors to lessen harms. Know where and how to get help. Victim-centered services like rape crisis centers provide a safe, healing environment where survivors can access resources and victim advocacy. Lassen Family Services’ Walk A Mile is 18 days away! Walk A Mile will take place at the Lassen County Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 24th, 2021 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Register through lfswalkamile.eventbrite.com or the day of the event at the entrance. On the day of the event, registration will begin at 9:00 am at the entrance of the fairgrounds 195 Russell Ave. Registration is $5 for adults 18 & up. Children 17 & under are free. The first 40 adults to register online wil...l get a free Walk A Mile t-shirt (sizes XL & L only that will be handed out the day of event on a first come first serve basis). Everyone MUST sign a waiver before participating in the walk. The purpose of Walk A Mile is to inform the community of the prevalence of sexual assault and child abuse and provide information on the support services offered in Lassen County. We walk to show our support and raise awareness. Lassen Family Services hosts this event annually during the month of April and at the end of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW). The motto of this year’s NCVRW and our goal is to Support Victims. Build Trust. Engage Communities. The $5 registration will go directly to our Child Trauma Therapy (CTT) program that provides therapy to children ages 3-18 who have gone through or witnessed traumatic events. What to wear: BLUE (to spread awareness of sexual assault & child abuse), closed toed shoes, clothing you don’t mind getting dirty, and sunglasses!

"Denim Day is a campaign on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The fo...llowing day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Since then, what started as a local campaign to bring awareness to victim blaming and destructive myths that surround sexual violence has grown into a movement. Thank You! We are so grateful to all the caregivers that form the support network for children in foster care. CASA volunteers stay by a child’s side throughout the case, advocating first for reunification when safe and possible. If reunification is not safe or possible, CASA volunteers will advocate for the child to be adopted by, or live with, other relatives or family friends. If that is also not possible, CASA volunteers will work towards adoption by a non-relative.... January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. By definition, human trafficking is the exploitation of another person for labor, domestic servitude, or commercial sexual activity by force, fraud, or coercion. Unfortunately this is not uncommon and often goes unnoticed, but by learning the signs of trafficking we can help save lives!

April 28th is Denim Day! Join us as we show our support for sexual assault survivors by wearing denim on Wednesday April 28th. Denim Day came out of an Italian Supreme Court decision to overturn a rape conviction based on the jeans the victim was wearing. The court ruled that because the girl’s jeans were so tight, she must have had to help the man take them off and therefore was consensual. Lassen Family Services' online peer counseling program operates from 9:00am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. The counselor advocate provides support and referrals, as well as ongoing peer counseling to victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault.
