La Oaxaqueña 02.11.2020

The Berkeleyside recently wrote an article about the many challenges small business/entrepreneurs/artist/creatives are facing during these shifting paradigms. Both moms and I expressed our perspectives! AND when I got the mike I didn’t not hold back. One of the most important and profound questions was, How do you both feel about the future? Rosa Oliva: The economics have been incredibly challenging. The money is not flowing and I don’t think things have improved all that muc...h since the start of the pandemic. But I still have hope that I can save enough money to pay off the land for a house back in Oaxaca. I want to move back there in two or three years. I don’t see a future myself here in the U.S. I need to get out, I need to get my peace. That’s why I want to go back to my homeland. Carolina Santos: I’m both excited and nervous for the future. I’m excited to create a new economy. I believe the systems that are in place are not here to serve Black and brown people but I think it’s going to be very chaotic before we get our bearings for what comes next. The pandemic has exposed the injustice and corruption is ingrained in the American culture and systems that we live under. I believe that another world is possible in my heart. I guess in that sense I’m a dreamer.

My familia, I would like to share a pic of my mother Rosa Oliva to celebrate HER. Her fortitude is inmensurable, she is the moving force behind ‘La Oaxaqueña ‘ and she needs of our support, like many immigrants in this country who are self-employed she will not qualify for unemployment or any of that jazz!!! My Madrecita and I are both creatives and entrepreneurs. She’s a mother, grandmother, master chef, seamstress and wisdom keeper. I’m a mother, daughter, artist, poet, ...curandera and we both love to cook; keeping the traditions of our ancestors alive!!! My son loves to skate, read the quarantine away and eat the foods we make. One of the things I enjoy most about the quarantine, is the pause that allows me to cook with mom and eat our meals as a family! I recently began connecting with my paternal grand-mother in Oaxaca, Mexico. We have been talking about her grandmother who was a medicine woman and I’m leaning about our ancestral traditions, healing arts and relationship to plants and food. Through this process, I’m reminded that the earth and our communities are abundant and resilient. That we were born to endure these times. That our blood and soul are well equipped for us to fulfill our agreement to be here; living in 2020 I also love to hike and go to the ocean, returning to myself as nature and remembering that nature is me. My least favorite thing these days, is going to the grocery store. I’m sensitive to people’s experience of fear and anxiety during these times of challenge and uncertainty. As part of the creative project SHELTER-IN-LOVE a photo distant project Artist @bmalik invites us to explore the gifts that we have to offer to navigate the wild times we are living and how to use them in service of our communities. www.bryonmalikphoto.com
