An ode of appreciation to the tree out front and the tree in back. . I just realized that soon these trees will lose their leaves for the season, and won’t look like they do now when @noelolken and I drive off towards our new home next March. So this is a love note of gratitude to these beauties. . Magnificent and magical, these sentries have embraced and protected our home for all of these years we’ve lived here, and I’m going to miss them. ... . Happily, I’m moving to a place that has a lot of trees. I’m a tree person and do get attached to trees that feel special to me. . The mulberry out back is directly outside of my office window, and I feel its royal presence while I’m in that room, which is often. It communicates, and every spring a fat little squirrel eats all the mulberries before they can ripen. I’ve watched this ritual for years now. It’s hilarious to me. . I don’t know the name of the tree out front, but it’s so pretty. You can sit on the deck and look up at it, it’s got weeping willow like branches. . On my first visit to Europe, I saw the Berlin Wall and both Berlins up close, and had an important lesson in unity. Two friends and I went on a month long journey throughout Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. It was December 1986, I had just turned 28, and I was ecstatic to see the world. We planned to be in Germany for Christmas and the New Year, and to travel to East Berlin for a couple of day trips while we were staying in West Berlin. This meant going to the other side of the Berlin Wall, through the Iron Curtain. Ever since childhood, I’ve been deeply committed to having my creativity in my life. As a young woman freshly graduated from art school, I created a fashion and costume business, which was my dream. I was making a living as an artist and designer, and hanging out with artists of all kinds. It was fascinating and fun, and exactly what I’d set out to do. But I was often invalidated and insecure about myself and my creations, and had the feeling that I wasn’t good enough. I was... painfully unaware of who I was, and how I could create myself. I had a difficult time being alone with myself and my own thoughts. To distract myself from dealing with my internal battles, I tried to heal those around me, even if they didn’t want me to. The ones who did want me to heal them dumped their pain in my space, and I didn’t know what to do about it. I attempted to solve the uncomfortable emotions I experienced by going faster and working too much. This is the jalapeño that rose from the dead. I planted this as a seedling back in May, falsely believing that as a hot pepper plant, it would be safe from ravenous bunnies. #lessonlearned Four months later, I’m happy to report that there’s a tiny little pepper growing, and more on the way!
