Duke to require students to be vaccinated for fall semester All students will have to be vaccinated for COVID-19 before they can enroll for the fall semester, President Vincent Price announced Friday. The policy covers all undergraduate and graduate students who intend to be on campus for any amount of time starting in the fall, and students will have to present proof of their vaccination to Student Health before enrolling. Duke will accommodate documented medical and religio...us exemptions. Looking ahead, we know that widespread vaccination will be the only way to facilitate a return to normal and robust campus life, Price wrote in a message to students, faculty and staff. Duke has offered all students and employees the opportunity to be vaccinated, Price noted. He urged those who have not yet been vaccinated to schedule appointments as soon as possible. UCLA report Digging Deeper Beyond the School House: Black students in 14 L.A. County school districts face serious equity barriers, study finds Black students in Los Angeles County continue to face a multitude of barriers to an equitable education, including concentrated poverty, high suspension rates and housing insecurity, a UCLA report released Wednesday found. Researchers focused on 14 school districts in the county that serve at least 800 Black students to understand how... various factors are leaving behind Black children, particularly those considered vulnerable. The report by the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools builds on a previous study that found schools serving Black students lacked critical resources counselors, nurses, social workers, highly qualified teachers and students’ home and community environment played a role in their academic success. Analyzing data collected before the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, researchers found that two underlying factors the concentration of economic inequality for many Black families and fluctuating Black student enrollment in districts that have not historically served them shaped student experiences. In order to understand the academic hardships Black students face, the report says, educators need also to consider health and environmental factors. https://www.latimes.com//black-students-la-county-school-d

All of this. Right here. Not just Congress!! --- Congress has become a deeply divided, almost toxic work environment in part because of the pro wrestling mentality too many members have adopted, putting showmanship ahead of statesmanship.... You may be surprised to know that most of the right-wing House members who spend endless hours on Fox News smearing Democrats actually want to be back-slapping buddies with us when the cameras are off. Some have defamed me on national television or by tweet and then, within a day, approached me in a hallway or on the House floor, smiling and wanting to chat me up. They seem surprised when I don’t want to share pleasantries; to them, they’re just playing the game. Last week one representative told me we were due to grab dinner again, as we had before the insurrection. I was stunned. This guy tweets about me and slams me on Fox News at every opportunity. Many of my Republican colleagues also don’t see the people they represent as constituents to serve; they see fans to entertain, thinking this will help them win re-election. But Congress shouldn’t be like WWE wrestling. You can’t smash a chair over someone’s head in the ring, then hang out backstage like it was all an act, and still expect to make any real progress on behalf of the people who elected us. The preoccupation with putting on a show often devastates the relationships required for bipartisan cooperation. https://www.nbcnews.com//republicans-smear-me-fox-news-the

Actor & ECC Grad William Allen Young Honored With Statewide Distinguished Alumni Award Star of stage and screen receives prestigious Community College League of California honor ---... William Allen Young, acclaimed actor and director and alumnus of El Camino College, is one of three individuals to be honored with the Community College League of California’s prestigious 2020 California Community College Distinguished Alumni Award. Young graduated from El Camino College in 1977 with an associate degree in speech communication. He transferred to USC on a full scholarship, where he was twice ranked the No. 1 college speaker in the nation. Young earned a bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and debate, then continued his education at Cal State Los Angeles, where he earned a master’s degree in sociolinguistics. Attending a community college was one of the best decisions of my life, Young said. During the time I spent at El Camino College, I was mentored and guided by passionate faculty members and counselors who educated and inspired me, helped me develop my talents, and prepared me to transfer to the University of Southern California and realize my life’s dream. Young is a prolific actor, with over 100 TV, stage, and film credits to his name. His performances include two Academy Award-nominated films, A Soldier’s Story and District 9, and he is recognized by millions of fans as Frank Mitchell, the tough-but-loving father on the TV series Moesha; as Judge Ratner on CSI Miami; and most recently as Dr. Rollie Guthrie on the CBS medical drama Code Black. The success and national fame I have achieved in my professional career is due in large part to those formative years I spent learning and growing at the community college level, Young said. There is no greater education than that which prepares you for success in the world. Thank you, California Community Colleges, for being there for all of us. In 2016, Young was named an El Camino College Distinguished Alumni. He is the recipient of the NAACP Outstanding Social Achievement Award and was deemed a Goodwill Ambassador by President Clinton, among other awards. Young is also the founder and president of the non-profit The Young Center for Academic and Cultural Enrichment, which serves the needs of low to moderate-income households in underserved communities in California. We’re so pleased that Mr. Young has received this well-deserved honor, said El Camino College President Dena P. Maloney. He truly has led a life of distinction, from the academic excellence he demonstrated as a young man to his successful acting career and his passionate advocacy for education. We’re so proud he’s part of the El Camino Warrior family. El Camino College welcomed Young to campus in 2019 as the keynote speaker at the 72nd Annual Commencement Ceremony. Let's get to work!! I think if your motivations are for the students and the community of the district, nobody’s going to have any issues at all, right? Whether it be the taxpayers, or the faculty, staff, administration or the board, [if] your motivation and your heart is wanting to get things done for the students of El Camino, nobody’s going to have any issues, Brown said.

ELECTION UPDATE From the El Camino College The Union: As election night comes to an end in Los Angeles County, voters have put Kenneth Brown, Trisha Murakawa and Katherine Steinbroner Maschler in the lead for El Camino College Board of Trustee in Areas one, three and four, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters.... In Area one, Kenneth A. Brown leads George A. Turner Jr. by 40.24%, according to the LA County Registrar. As numbers continue to roll in, Brown feels hopeful for the official results. I’m optimistic. I was optimistic going into the election and during the campaign. [And] so far, it looks like the voting population of Inglewood and Ladera Heights are resonating with me. But again, it’s still a little early. And so I’ve not broken the bottle of sparkling cider just yet, Brown said.

Hey Everyone! Less than a day to go before the election. I wanted to ask you all for your support, and if you have already voted, please let your friends and family know that I need their vote for my re-election to the El Camino Board of Trustees. Serving as a member of the ECC Board of Trustees has been one of the great honors of my professional life. That is why I am thrilled to be running for re-election, so I can continue to play a role in the endeavor of this critical w...ork. During the past three years, we have celebrated a significant accomplishment of increasing our student degrees and certificates by 54%! To continue this momentum, my top priorities are to: Maintain El Camino’s excellence in Academic Preparation and Vocational Training Increase student success and completion rates Communicate clearly and regularly to inspire students to achieve their educational goals Support faculty and staff in their efforts to foster a positive campus learning environment for all students Protect taxpayer dollars by providing transparency, oversight, and accountability Now more than ever, our students are counting on us to expand their opportunities and access to education. And my commitment to creating a bridge to access is unwavering. In addition to focusing on student equity and the completion of education goals, we will continue to highlight and emphasize non-traditional pathways to success, including nurturing strategic partnerships that support adequate funding. I am eager to continue advocating for El Camino College, Inglewood, and all of our students as I have done so for the past nine years. I look forward to your vote! DID YOU KNOW.... This is my Uncle Edward McCrary, III. Uncle Ed is responsible for me being on the El Camino College Board of Trustees today. I first got a call from Inglewood Unified School District Board Member Alice Grigsby who alerted me to the position, but my next phone call was to my Uncle so I could learn more about ECC culture. He helped me decide on whether I should run and when I did, kept me on my toes with issues affecting the campus community. Born in Kansas Cit...y, MO, Ed graduated from San Diego High School when his family moved to Southern California early in his life. Ed received a B.S. in Psychology from Cal State Los Angeles and soon after graduation joined the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana and while there he was a Psychometrist, a soldier's analyst. Once his military service ended, Ed returned to school in California where he earned an M.S. in Psychology from Pepperdine University. Following graduation, he joined the LA County Probation Department where he met another lifelong buddy, Keith Brown. While at the Probation Department, Ed established his own Marriage and Family Counseling practice. Ed worked there for several years before discovering his true passion, teaching. He became a professor at El Camino College and taught psychology there for more than thirty years before his retirement in 2006. Hundreds of students passed through his classes, where he often became a mentor and trusted advisor. Ed is fondly remembered by many of his students: some who became friends and others who became colleagues.
