Meta Analysis Confirms Acupuncture Effective for Chronic Pain In May of 2018, The Journal of Pain published a study called "Acupuncture for Chronic Pain: Update of an Individual Patient Data Meta-Analysis." This large-scale project analyzed 39 scientific trials with 20,827 study participants. Researchers narrowed their focus to the patient's pain levels and their ability to physically function. They also put great importance on the effect of acupuncture to produce results aft...er the conclusion of treatment. Researchers discovered that acupuncture treatments showed significant results in the reduction of chronic pain, when compared to sham acupuncture or no treatment at all. These results lasted for one year after therapy and ... Read more Patient Newsletter Excerpt Acupuncture for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the name for a group of diseases that damage the lungs and pose difficulties in breathing, is the third leading cause of death in the Unites States. Symptoms often start slowly and may take years to present, leading many to receive delayed diagnosis and treatment. By the time the signs are noticeable, extensive lung tissue damage has usually occurred. This damage is not reversible but symptoms such as chest tightness, strained breathing, and excess mucus production can be stabilized and further harm can be mitigated with treatment. It is very important to seek medical treatment immediately if you notice that you can no longer climb stairs or walk without becoming short of breath, your lips and/or fingernails become blue when you exert yourself, or you notice your mental abilities are failing. There are many ways acupuncture and Oriental medicine can help. First, if you need help breaking a smoking addiction, there are very specific ear acupuncture and/or body acupuncture protocols designed to do just that. Second, there are acupuncture treatments to assist your lungs by helping them relax. Once your body is at rest, blood and airflow may increase, which... Read Full Article.

How many of us have begun our gym lives with many trips to the gym with little or no benefit. We are looking for weight loss, increased physical fitness or both. We all find - I know I did - that simply working out hard is not the solution. I worked out 5 days a week for 75 minutes each visit and saw no appreciable gains in either muscular definition or loss of fat. I saw many others at the gym who were there as reliably as I was with even fewer gains. There are those t...hat work out less and have greater gains in fitness. These are the outliers, those with the genetic predisposition towards increased fitness. Short of genetic modification, we must work out smarter. Working out smarter must include an appropriate amount of rest (recovery) alongside our time in the gym. But how do we compress our recovery time and therefore maximize the benefits of our time in the gym (or trail or road). The major components of athletic achievement are your workout regimen balanced by an appropriate amount of recovery. How do we then compress these two necessary issues into the least amount of time and inconvenience? A study performed by Lin, Lan, et al, found that athletic recovery performance as measured in men was more pronounced in a group which acupuncture was performed on the PC6 and ST36 regions of the body. PC6 is on the wrist and ST36 is below the knee. Athletic performance was evaluated by a lowering of heart rate, breathing and a reduction in lactic acid. The conclusion was that recovery was enhanced for athletes by stimulating these areas of the body through acupuncture versus a group that was given inappropriate acupuncture and a control group that received no acupuncture. Essentially, one group got the real deal, the next got fake acupuncture and the third received no therapy at all. Another study showed that power output could be increased. Yet another showed heart rate decreased, oxygen consumption and the amount of residual lactate in muscles was also reduced. Acupuncture is a genuine way to improve the way we work out and also shorten the amount of recovery time.
