Teacher Spotlight- Peter Smith shares a current challenge pose. The first challenge of Savasana is actually doing the pose, making time for it. Often with a busy schedule, it is easy to skip Savasana. One reason not to skip the pose is its benefits including removing fatigue, calming the mind and the nerves! Once I am in Savasana the next challenge is to quiet the mind. My mind usually latches onto the upcoming tasks of the day. When I find my mind wondering, I focus on my... breath. Teacher Spotlight- Pat McLoughlin shares a current challenge pose. Urdhva Mukha Svanasana or Upward Facing Dog is a pose that I struggle with mostly because I am not able to capture that upward feeling. In order to make friends with the pose, I use a chair to foster a light uplifted feeling and next a version with a bolster to brace the thighs and funnel their energy upwards. I realize that as I write this post I am missing my strongest strategy for making friends- putting U...MS in various daily sequences so I can explore and catch different facets of the pose. Teacher Spotlight- Kitty Franklin shares a current Challenge Pose. Parivrtta Trikonasana is a pose that I have struggled with for years. It combines both a forward-bending and a twisting action. My challenge is maintaining stability in the pose. I always feel like I’m going to topple over! I have discovered that the key to stability is to keep the back heel down which, of course, makes the twist more difficult. This is the last pose I do every night. The beauty of this pose is that it squeezes the lower legs. When you straighten the legs again, fresh, oxygen-rich blood comes rushing in, restoring vitality to the lower extremities (feet, ankles, calves). I practice Supta Virasana after a long ...flight or walk to relieve swelling in the legs.
