When Cristina and Abraham’s daughter Amelia was born prematurely, they worried constantly about keeping her healthy and strong. For years now, LinkedIn has teamed up with IIBA to help immigrants seeking economic opportunity and stability in the United States. Since 2017, LinkedIn’s Pro Bono Team has helped people achieve their dreams of U.S. citizenship, by hosting IIBA’s naturalization workshops on LinkedIn’s Campus and by providing pro bono support for the workshops. LinkedIn’s Pro Bono Team has also worked with IIBA’s legal team to make sure young immigrants can successfully renew their DACA status..., granting them work authorization and protection from deportation. Hanh Vo, Vice President of Commercial Legal at LinkedIn and the co-founder of LinkedIn’s Pro Bono Team, says, LinkedIn’s vision is to create economic opportunity for every member of the workforce, so IIBA’s DACA and naturalization workshops were a natural fit for LinkedIn’s Pro Bono Program. This year, with community safety in mind, IIBA converted our in-person workshops to remote workshops using Zoom. Since then, LinkedIn’s Pro Bono Team has supported two virtual DACA renewal workshops and one citizenship workshop, helping 30 individuals renew their DACA status and 20 eligible green card holders apply for U.S. Citizenship. Meet Mo, an IIBA client, volunteer, and donor! Mo, who emigrated from Kenya to attend college in the United States, became a United States Citizen with the help of IIBA’s Legal Team. As a Citizen, Mo is excited to exercise his right to vote in the upcoming 2020 Election. Why did you register to vote? ... I registered to vote because I feel it is my responsibility and it was the reason I applied for citizenship in the first place. I believe through voting, I can make a difference. You recently volunteered at one of IIBA’s citizenship workshops and became an IIBA donor. What inspired you to volunteer and donate? I had the time to volunteer, knowing how stressful the citizenship process is, if I could help somebody along this path, I want to do that. I donated because I had a few extra dollars, and IIBA has helped me so much. As someone who has been stressed out about my immigration process, and then to come to IIBA, and come out better off and a citizen, I wanted to donate to help someone else experience that as well. What is something you are hopeful for about the future? A lot of tech innovations come from the United States, and I am hopeful that we will be able to make more people’s lives easier. People here can dream of things being different because society doesn’t create only one way for everyone to live or to think. I am hopeful the United States will keep this attitude and keep cultivating it and spreading it everywhere. This past Friday, we lost a civil rights icon. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought for all of us and was an example of how a single life can make such a difference in the lives of so many. At a naturalization ceremony in 2018, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said, "My own father arrived in this land at age 13 with no fortune and speaking no English. My mother was born four months after her parents, with several children in tow, came by ship to Ellis Island. My fathe...r and grandparents reached as you do for the American dream. As testament to our nation’s promise, the daughter and granddaughter of these immigrants sits on the highest court in the land and will proudly administer the oath of citizenship to you." Today is Citizenship Day observed each year on September 17 to commemorate the signing of the Constitution and recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization have become citizens. In the coming weeks, United States Citizens will be able to exercise one of our most powerful rights: the right to vote. This week, Dawn Wooten, a licensed nurse at the Irwin Detention Center, in Georgia, filed a whistleblower complaint, stating that ICE has been performing hysterectomies on non-English speaking immigrants who could not give informed consent. Immigrants in ICE custody have also been subjected to medical neglect and horrendous conditions. IIBA and Stanford University Students teamed up during shelter-in-place to conduct outreach by phone to 1,300 individuals about the 2020 Census, helping ensure they had the help they needed to overcome any barriers to completing the census. Thank you to the Stanford Language Center and the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University for making this collaboration possible!... What do you find meaningful about helping IIBA with our census outreach to immigrant communities? With so many obstacles in the wayit’s more important than ever that we emphasize the importance of the census, and restore confidence in the process. Every time I talk to someone who has already filled out the census, or give instructions to someone who hasn’t yet filled out their form, I am reminded that so many people are working hard to make sure their communities are counted. Courtney Cooperman, Stanford Student The census is such a crucial part of how the government allocates resources, such as housing resources and money for schools. I think it is so important to make people aware that they are safe filling out the census, and to know it really is important for them to get resources allocated to their community. Elanor Diffenbaugh, Stanford Student Those who are often most hesitant to fill out the census typically live in communities where it is really important to allocate resources, so I think it’s really meaningful to remind people of the census and dispel the myths about it, to make sure people know there is no citizenship question and it is used to benefit their community, not to harm them. DACA changed my life overnight, Jose said. DACA made it possible for Jose to apply for the private loans he needed to finally put himself through Dental School. Jose, who graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in molecular biology, had always dreamed of giving back to his hometown of Napa as a dentist. I want to give back to families that don’t have access to dental care or insurance, a lot like myself growing up, Jose said. ... Just this past month, Jose completed the last day of his Dentist Residency. He plans to join a local community clinic where he can give back to the Napa Community and work with marginalized and underserved communities.
