I’m a PITCHER, I don’t ever run the bases and I don’t need to be fast. Most pitchers BIG MISTAKE... Sprinting is the most neurally demanding movement the human body can perform, so taking advantage of that stimulus is an absolute must regardless of sport or position.... Human Athlete Pitcher Pitchers should develop the nervous system to the highest level possible with every training mean available. Training for speed results in inter-muscular and intramuscular coordination, rate coding, and in the end developing a more efficient neuromuscular system. Zach Dechant Sprinting is beneficial in developing speed, but the advantages extend past the speed aspect: Neuromuscular efficiency - The central nervous system drives everything. Speed is a neural quality which increases recruitment of motor units and improves rate coding (the nervous systems ability to activate muscle tissue). Sprinting is less about training the muscles, and more about training the nervous system. Rate of force development (Assists in strength and power development) - The amount of force an athlete applies into the ground during sprinting, as well as tension levels throughout the body, are much greater than any lift or activity an athlete can do in the gym. In addition, there is no human movement skill that trains an athlete to move with intent like sprinting. Athletic Proprioception, coordination and synchronization - Sprinting in its most efficient form takes a tremendous amount of coordination. The action of sprinting requires an athlete to know where ones body is in space during high velocities. Reduce the likelihood of injury during sport when implemented properly - Sprint training is a protective mechanism against sprains and injuries as it prepares athletes for the high speed movements involved in sport. Since speed development is a neural quality, it must be done with maximal intensities and complete rest. The frequency and manner in which you implement sprints into training will vary depending on the needs of your sport and time of year, but nearly all athletes can benefit from incorporating speed training. Pivot Pickoff Adjustment Many people know the benefits that pivot pickoffs have on remapping arm action and glove arm mechanics but I think they are a great opportunity drive home the importance of internal rotation on the right hip; or the rear hip of a normal pitching delivery for righties. You can see in the first video, this athlete allows his right leg to bow out (abduct and externally rotate) and that creates excessive counter rotation of the torso and a ...pushy arm action. Cueing him to stabilize his right leg as he counter rotates his torso leads to better separation between glove arm and throwing arm which creates more efficient rotation and eliminates the pushy arm action. . @klrogers28 See more

ARM CARE GOALS There are two main goals I try to keep in mind when building shoulder health for overhead athletes. 1 Glenohumeral stability and strength... 2 Scapulothoracic coordination When most people think about the shoulder, they are thinking about the glenohumeral joint. Often overlooked is the importance of the scapulothoracic joint, which is the relationship between the rib cage and the shoulder blade. In order to create a stable position in the GH joint, the shoulder blade must create adequate and stable movement to keep the head of the humerus and it’s socket in good position. Traditional arm care usually attacks 1, strengthening the internal and external rotators of the rotator cuff. Traditional arm care usually completely neglects 2, and that is an issue. The scapula must coordinate optimal movement to react to the positioning of the rib cage, and drive the arm where it wants to go. Glenohumeral stability and strength focuses on motor potential, the tissue’s ability to create enough force to make the movement. Motor control or coordination is another story. Once that motor potential is built, the coordination needs to be challenged to create more successful motor solutions. From there we should put a little more focus into motor control, and the ability to coordinate scapulothoracic movement, which allows the glenohumeral joint to stay in a more centrated position within the socket. Doing a healthy portion of both will create a symbiotic relationship that will enhance the effectiveness of each goal!

Hip Hike in Pitching Pelvic control and coordination is pivotal in creating rotational power. Two overlooked coordinative abilities are the ability to control the movement of the pelvis around a fixed femur, and control of the pelvis in the frontal plane. In the image of @tylerbeede you can see that his pelvis is hiked up at an angle, allowing him to sit into his back hip while still maintaining his trunk stacked above his pelvis. Athletes with a low ability to con...trol their pelvis will create a false lean back by just leaning through their torso, without actually staying stacked over their pelvis. The drive hip is working hard to create and maintain that hip abduction over a fixed femur, but the opposing side trunk musculature is also working to hold up the pelvis in that tilt. This is exemplified in a study from Stu McGill. They observed strongmen events such as yoke carries and suitcase carries. They found that hip abduction strength could not account for the ability to maintain pelvic position in walking events, and that the trunk musculature worked eccentrically to maintain pelvic position. I believe it is beneficial to challenge and improve an athlete’s ability to coordinate these hip hike positions. This concept pulls from Frans Bosch’s concept of hip locks, and we love hip lock drills for improving this pattern. Side note: Some coaches cue athletes out of this hip hike, referring to it as a compensation pattern. This is evident in drills like hurdle step over when coaches force athletes to keep their pelvis neutral. Let the body work people!! @ Sacramento, California See more

Throwing slow sucks! As a baseball player growing up I didn’t naturally throw hard and nothing I tried helped. It was so frustrating!... You may be in the same shoes and know the feeling. I continually found myself working with new pitching coaches, trying to figure out what to do in the gym (mostly from bodybuilding sites - trying to get jacked!), experimenting with different throwing programs and searching for the next new thing. This way before there were data-driven programs like Driveline and experienced baseball strength coaches like Eric Cressey! I had the work ethic, drive and desire, I just didn’t have a proven system to follow. Our goal is to those help players who are frustrated and take their game to the next level. We don’t want any athletes getting passed up for scholarships or playing opportunities because they don’t have the desired velocity or necessary tools. Our proven athletic development system partnered with our highly experienced pitching director Kyle Rogers (former Driveline Baseball lead strength coach and throwing coach) takes the guesswork out of building velocity, durability to withstand innings, and maximizes your playing opportunities.
