Come as you are, the rallying cry NEDA embraced during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, highlights that everyone’s story is unique. Eating disorders do not look like one particular person and they do not follow one particular path. While NEDA knows this statement to be true, we also know that the stereotype of what an eating disorder is, and who struggles, still creates barriers. It keeps those who do not fit this mold from realizing that they can in fact be struggli...ng with this illness. More importantly it keeps these very same people from realizing that they are deserving of care, support, and recovery. Our NEDA Ambassador Ryan Sheldon captures it best when he talks about being a male and having been diagnosed with an eating disorder a few years back. At the time of my diagnosis, I did what any other person would doI went to google and typed in ‘men with eating disorders,’ and to my surprise, nothing really came up. How was that possible? How could there be no real solid information out there on men with eating disorders? We are changing that. At NEDA we are working hard to spread awareness and to reach those who in the past have been kept silent simply because of who they are, how they look, how old they are, or how much income they may have. Stand with us today and tell those struggling: Regardless of who you are, we are here for you. We see you, accept you, and most importantly, we know you are deserving of respect, support, treatment, and recovery.
