Humboldt & Del Norte Central Labor Council 02.05.2021

Joe passed suddenly on April 4th, 2021. Joe had passion for working people and progressive values that made his many years working as a labor representative less of a job and more of a calling. His keen wit and cutting humor was only surpassed by his old fashion work ethic. The North Bay Labor Council is raising funds in memory of Joe to help the family cover final expenses. One hundred percent of the money raised will go to Joe's family for whatever they need.

The Labor Council has endorsed grocery worker Hazard pay ordinances for the cities of Eureka and Arcata. Please contact the Eureka city council with your supprt and request they place this on the agenda. Arcata has placed it on the agenda for Wednesday March 17th, so please reach out through public comment and voice your support: [email protected] Here's a brief synopsis: -Grocery workers have a 1 in 5 chance of contracting COVID 19 compared to 1 in 100 for the general publ...ic. They can not work from home. -Employers ended hero/appreciation pay in July, but have continued with record profits due to closures of restaurants and bars without sharing these record profits with their workers. -This would be a temporary ordinance until we reach the yellow tier or a minimum of 90 days. -It would apply to stores carrying a minimum of 10% groceries. -$4/hr for employers with 500 or more employees nationally and 15 or more locally -$3/hr for employers with 26 to 499 employees locally -Grocery workers are essential and have continued to work in the face of a pandemic while often juggling childcare/instruction; -Federal and State mandated COVID paid leave of up to 14 days and 80 hours ceased December 31st at the height of the pandemic. -While vaccinations have begun for grocery workers, we are hardly there as the county estimates it will takes months to get them all vaccinated (please see the article in Thursday’s Red Headed Black belt)

"If Proposition 22 passes, the measure would cement gig workers’ status as independent contractors. It would compel companies to give them some additional benefits that mimic those offered to employees under California labor law but are weaker. The measure lays out plans for a private insurance policy to cover on-the-job injuries that in some ways replicates the state’s workers’ compensation system. However, experts say there are clear gaps, and the program will not offer protection that’s as comprehensive as workers’ compensation."
