(Updated with links to donate) I am humbled and overcome with gratitude. Disasters bring people together. Love and community can triumph. I am sharing this ...story to bring attention to the families affected by the Creek fire, not for public accolades. Numerous fires are burning in California. Like many, I have been watching the news coverage of these fires as a spectator. Just before Labor Day, the Creek fire broke out in the Sierra Nevada mountains just outside of Fresno. Currently, more than 45,000 (and counting) people have been evacuated and 175k acres have burned. The fire is currently 0% contained and is not expected to be under control until mid-October, over a month away. On Tuesday I sat in my office completely devastated by this information. At this point the evacuations were in full swing and entire towns were being evacuated. I know many of the affected families. A relative’s family was one of many evacuated to a local hotel. She informed me that there were at least 40 other families staying in one hotel, and that many more in other hotels. She said they just wanted a home-cooked meal. After brainstorming, we realized that we could do something to help more than just one or two families. John and Brynn Grady, owners of Skyline Bar & Grill in Clovis were happy to help host a dinner for the Creek fire evacuees staying in local hotels. They assembled a small army of volunteers and within 24 hours we were ready to host 160 people. This was not a fundraiser. The sole purpose of this dinner was to bring people together for a meal and give them the opportunity to gather, relax and feel normal. We provided each family with a full dinner, sack lunch to go and snack bags. Many generous people's cash donations made it possible for us to distribute goodie bags to the kids, toiletries to the adults and $400 in gift cards. I was moved by the stories, many had multiple evacuations and did not know if their homes were still standing. We saw such generosity. Several of the families (who did not lose their homes) insisted on making donations. Currently the Skyline has 18 meals that have been donated for fire victims and continue to collect for additional meals. Volunteers from Pinc (Philanthropy Inspired by the Needs of our Community) were on site collecting items for the firefighters. Pinc is a volunteer organization that coordinates specific requests with other organizations. They have helped to gather items for the families, items for the firefighters and even provided gasoline to help transport animals. They should wear pink capes. No donation is too small (or large). Donate to Pinc and specify Creek fire. They will accept cash & giftcards as well as goods (clothing, shoes, unopened personal care items, etc.). You can also specify if you want your donation to go to benefit the families, the animals, or the firefighters.
