FAIRE 19.01.2021

Dear Friends of FAIRE: After carefully and thoughtfully considering all our options, we have decided that as of November 2020, Friends of the Animals in the Redwood Empire (FAIRE) will begin winding down its operations and settling its accounts with full closure of our non-profit activities by June 30, 2021. Since 1985, FAIRE's board and its large community of supporters have worked together to improve the lives of companion animals and their owners in Sonoma County. We've co...me a long way in our 35 years. When FAIRE was formed, the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter was a two-room cinder block building adjacent to a city sewage treatment plant. Now, the replacement shelter we fought for is celebrating its 25th year. Over the years we've renewed our focus and identified new goals to keep moving forward. With your support, we established a spay/neuter discount program that provided well over $100,000 to pet owners to reduce animal overpopulation. We spent tens of thousands of dollars advertising the pets available for adoption at our local shelters and set up a clearing house for animal adoptions through our FAIREonline.org website. For years we have provided the U.S. Humane Society's Kind News to help teachers provide humane education in their classrooms. With the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter still near and dear to our hearts, we also underwrote foster care supplies for kittens too young to be adopted, funded dog training, and helped pay for major renovations. We have also made grants to other local fledgling 501(c)(3) animal welfare organizations and provided emergency funding to aid animal rescue and care following our recent wildfires. Meanwhile, companion animal services have evolved in Sonoma County. Challenges remain, but we no longer have the holes in coverage that existed in 1985. The animal shelter network in our county is robust with all shelters working together on an area-wide basis. Major issues like feral cat colonies are being addressed by groups like Forgotten Felines of Sonoma County. Many other rescue groups have formed to complement the activities of our local animal shelters. Bottom line: our companion animals have a lot more friends looking after them. We thank you for helping us reach our goal to find loving homes for so many companion animals in need over the last 35 years We have done a lot together and others will take up the remaining challenges and continue to move the cause forward. YOU have accomplished so much. Sonoma County is a better place because you cared. Be well, FAIRE's Board of Directors June Alexander, Denise Boardman, Kathy Gates, Al and Carol Haggerty; Denise Hill, Paul Hock, Joe Lilienthal, and Ann Strom
