Love and Other Consolation Prizes Jamie Ford It's Asian Pacific Islanders Month! ... Loosely based around the 1909 Seattle's Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (World's Fair) where a baby boy was auctioned off as part of the Fair's festivities. (Yes! That really happened in the USA) During this time in Seattle (and elsewhere) Chinese children were smuggled into this country to be sold as slaves, "working girls" or spouses. The boy in this story is 5 when we meet him but is, in fact, auctioned off and won by a Madam who runs one of the upscale brothels in the city. There, Ernest meets other working children (as well as prostitutes) and he both grows up quickly and makes his first real friends. The story goes on to follow the lives of Ernest and 2 young females from the brothel as they grow together, apart and together again. The story is at once a love story and a story of resilience. A Superior Death Nevada Barr If you have never read a book in the Anna Pigeon Series by Nevada Barr, you are in for a treat.... The series takes place in various National Parks and feature Anna Pigeon, a Park Ranger. There is mystery, suspense, intrigue and fun in every book. In an ideal world you’d read them in order although, it’s not really as critical here as it is in some series. I’ve jumped around based on 2 things: 1) my interest in the area 2) availability at the library. I’ve read all of the books on audio and enjoyed them immensely, the reader does a great job. Every Anna Pigeon book that I have read has been at least a 4 star read. A Superior Death takes place in my home state of Michigan, on Isle Royale National Park and Lake Superior (the largest, deepest and the coldest of the Great Lakes). There are many ship wrecks in that area including the Kamloops, a vessel that sunk in 1927 with 5 sailors on board. The summers on the Isle are filled with tourists, many of whom enjoying diving near the wrecks. When some divers discover an additional body among one of the wrecks, Anna must discover who it is and how and why it got there. Part mystery, part adventure story the book, like all Anna Pigeon stories, is a well-written page turner-full of twists and turns. No wonder man was always out to conquer Nature, Anna thought. He can’t bear it that she doesn’t love him, or even hate him. She simply doesn’t give a damn. I Read this book years ago but it is still with me. A Superior Death is book #2 in the series. Thus far I have read: Destroyer Angel #18, Liberty Falling #7, Blood Lure #9, Burn #16, Deep South #8, and Hunting Season #10. The theme is similar throughout the series - whether Anna is on duty or just visiting. The locations and other characters vary by book #emptynestreader #asuperiordeath #nevadabarr #annapigeonseries #stmartinspress #recordedbooks #audiobook #nationalparks #fiction #mystery #bookstagramalabama #bookstagrammichigan #emptynestreaderaudiobook #audible #readalittlelearnalittlelivealittle

Turkish garbage collectors opened a library containing the books citizens threw in the trash (not a joke, but so interesting to book lovers)

Little did Francine know that when Count Markham asked her to have a seat by the fire in his grand sitting room, he was sending her through a portal to a magic ...wood. She sat down, chilled to the bone from her walk through the snow to meet with the Count about her father's debt to him, and she immediately fell back through the chair. The next thing she knew, she was staring up at a blue summer sky. A man carrying a crossbow was leaning against a tree across the field. "How am I ever going to get out of here if he keeps sending me damsels in distress?" the man asked, annoyed, as he pushed himself away from the tree. "Come on, it will be dark soon." Francine sat up, not disoriented enough to let that damsel comment slide. "Leave the crossbow and go," she said. "I can take care of myself." The man arched an eyebrow, then slowly smiled. #SAAShortShortStorySunday Some Sundays I post a short, short story about a photo. Feel free to continue the tale in the comments! (I took this photo by the lobby fire at The Grand Bohemian Hotel in Asheville, N.C.)

A Deception at Thornecrest, Ashley Weaver 1/2Amory is pregnant & due in a few weeks; Milo is in London on business; a woman claiming to be Mrs. Milo Ames shows up on the doorstep; and Milo's long-lost 1/2 brother shows up as well..... - 1/2 star for that....A local young man is murdered; after unceremoniously dumping him for Milo's brother, his former girlfriend dies soon afterwards. The characters do not get along, there are too many secrets, and Amory gets to the bottom of it all.I just wished to hell Weaver would stop Amory's continually harping on Milo's wild past.... Bring it up once, but it gets boring when it it throughout the entire story!

Sorry, I do have the "spoiler" tag in both GR and LT. Don't read past that first sentence, unless you click the link to go to LT (where the spoiler tag will hide what I intended on hiding!).

The Girls in the Garden Lisa Jewell The book begins with Pip (12) finding her sister, Grace (13,) passed out and bloody in the neighborhood’s communal garden/... back yard. The remainder of the story is devoted to determining how Grace ended up in this state and who is responsible. Toward this end we meet Grace’s family and her neighbors and learn their secrets and their idiosyncrasies. We also learn the secrets that the collective neighborhood has ignored for years as many of the current adult residents were raised as children in this same area. There are plenty of petty jealousies between the families - some from grudges that should have been long since buried, some fresh and raw. Although this was a fun whodunit, there is a lot going on in this story and, frankly, sometimes it was difficult to keep all of the characters straight. There are also a lot of extraneous details. I previously read (and reviewed) Lisa Jewell’s Then She Was Gone and The Family Upstairs, both of which were excellent. The Girls in the Garden was disappointing in comparison. Good, not great. #emptynestreader #instagram #facebook #Goodreads #thegirlsinthegarden #lisajewell #atriabooks #fiction #mystery #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramalabama #bookstagrammichigan #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookrecommendations #readingbringsjoy #whatimreading #booksilove #goodreadschallenge #igbooks #bookfetish #octoberreads #readalittlelearnalittlelivealittle #ebooks #kindle #kindlebooks

Tis the Season! A Secret History of Witches Lisa Morgan ... A beautiful tale of the bonds between mothers and daughters over multiple generations. Intriguing and rich in historical detail, this magical tale examines each of the five generations of women, their unique family, their relationships and their skills (which are passed from mother to daughter). These strong women work to use their skills (their craft) for the betterment of all persons in a world that is hostile to their kind. I was ‘bewitched’ by this book from the beginning and found it to be a fast-paced and fun. A nice mix of historical fiction and fantasy. "We live our lives the way we want. We don’t need men to take care of us, which many men, and some women, too, think is unnatural. They find it terrifying. #emptynestreaderaudiobook #audiobook #emptynestreader #bookreview #asecrethistoryofwitches #louisamorgan #fiction #historicalfiction #witches #fantasy #redhook #hatchett #bookstagramalabama #bookstagrammichigan #readalittlelearnalittlelivealittle

The Marco Effect Jussi Adler-Olsen Marco Jameson’s life is ruled by his Uncle Zola, who runs a gypsy-like clan of wayward children. Zola forces Marco and the o...thers to work the streets - begging and stealing - to make himself a wealthy man. Marco wishes to be an ordinary child, to go to school and live a life without crime. When he escapes from his uncle’s control he is on the run, forced to live on the streets. Unfortunately Marco knows too much and his uncle is determined to catch him - and kill him. Detective Carl Merck is the head of Department Q, the department for missing persons and unsolved cases in the Danish police. Merck and his staff come upon a missing persons case that is directly related to Zola’s crime syndicate and Marco sees this as his opportunity to get Zola off of his back. Meanwhile, other persons turn up dead and it is apparent that there is more to the missing persons case than a single dead body and a runaway boy - 10 million krona more! While Zola and others are searching for Marco, Merck is searching for Zola, Marco and the others. It is this cat and mouse type game that provides the suspense and excitement of the story. Sometimes police work was like a lottery, you checked your ticket stubs hoping you had drawn at least one winning number. There are a lot of characters in this story, as well as a lot of extraneous details going on. At times it was very difficult to keep it all straight. The Marco Effect marks my return to the Department Q series after a hiatus. I needed a break because the others were so intense and suspenseful . I have previously read (and reviewed) the first 4 books in the series, all of which were excellent. The Marco Effect was disappointing in comparison. Good, not great. #emptynestreader #instagram #facebook #Goodreads #themarcoeffect #jussiadlerolsen #penguinaudio #fiction #departmentq #mystery #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramalabama #bookstagrammichigan #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookrecommendations #readingbringsjoy #whatimreading #booksilove #goodreadschallenge #igbooks #bookfetish #octoberreads #readalittlelearnalittlelivealittle #audible #audiobooks #emptynestreaderaudiobooks

What Alice Forgot Liane Moriarty "That was the day Alice Mary Love went to the gym and carelessly misplaced a decade of her life."... Having passed out during spin class Alice comes to and is taken by ambulance to the hospital. What Alice remembers is that she is 29 years old, happily married and pregnant with her first child. What Alice forgot is that in reality she is 39 years old, the mother of 3 children and in the process of divorce. Now Alice needs to reconcile what she thinks she knows with a new reality. Why is she getting a divorce? She loves her husband or, at least, she thought she did. Why does her sister barely speak to her anymore? Who is she now and who has she become? "Each memory, good and bad, was another invisible thread that bound them together, even when they were foolishly thinking they could lead separate lives. It was as simple and complicated as that." As Alice struggles to understand how she ended up where she is in her life today, we are left asking those very same questions. What have I become? What have I done in the past 10 years? Do I like who I am now? Would I do anything differently if I could do it all over again? What Alice Forgot is perfect for book clubs - there's plenty to discuss. #emptynestreader #instagram #bookstagram #Goodreads. #whataliceforgot #lianemoriarty #berkleybooks #romance #humorous #suspense #amnesia #bookstagramalabama #bookstagrammichigan #readalittlelearnalittlelivealittle

A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo Jill Twiss and John Oliver A book with a message as critical today as ever. ... A beautiful, sweet, loving, and kind children's book - for the child in each of us. Addressing issues of loving who you love, acceptance of one another, being "different", speaking up and speaking out. Interestingly, the book also addresses the importance of voting (Marlon Bundo is VP Mike Pence's bunny - it will make sense when you read it). Beautifully illustrated, this touching story teaches us that "Everyone is different. And different is not bad. 100% of proceeds go to the Trevor Noah Project and AIDS United #emptynestreader #instagram #bookstagram #goodreads #adayinthelifeofmarlonbundo #jilltwiss #illustratedbyegkeller #johnoliver #lastweektonight #lgbtq #childrensbook #picturebook #fiction #humor #love #bookstagram #bookstagramalabama #bookstagrammichigan #readalittlelearnalittlelivealittle #chroniclebooks #yaliterature #kidlitpick
