Interns are an integral part of our Foothill Family programs, and thanks to the Gretta Ayoub Casalnuovo Memorial Scholarship Fund, we provide financial support to graduate students in the field of social work. Gretta Ayoub Casalnuovo @gretta.casalnuovo had a passion for helping others and reaching those in the community who needed support through her important work at Foothill Family. Her passion also extended to the vital interns whom she mentored as they navigated school,... career work, and life. Being awarded the Distinguished Field Instructor Award from USC USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work for her outstanding work in the area of Clinical Field Instruction solidified Gretta’s extraordinary work ethic and dedication to the community. Mental health and early childhood development services are needed now more than ever as our communities navigate these challenging times. Your continued support helps keep her legacy alive and enables other recipients to thrive and make our community stronger, while alleviating some of the financial hardships of pursuing higher education. On #NationalSuperHeroDay we salute all the superheroes who don't wear capes. Throughout the past year, we've seen so many heroes who have stepped in and stepped up to help others. It's these every day heroes who truly make a difference. There's more to being a hero than being able to fly or having other superpowers. Being kind, helping others, and doing what's right even when it's hard are all things that make for pretty good, real-life heroes.

Enrique came to Foothill Family with deep feelings of abandonment, and had low self-esteem from being bullied in school. At 12, he isolated himself from his close family, lost interest in things that brought him joy, and felt worthless. His overwhelming feelings of sadness and rejection stemmed from experiencing the separation of parents when he was only 3, and being abandoned by his father. He didn’t want to talk during therapy sessions, so Enrique and his therapist mostly... communicated through writing and drawing until the pandemic hit. Then the two of them started communicating by phone and Enrique began to open up and express his thoughts more comfortably. Being able to spend more time with friends and family, Enrique started to feel less lonely. After 7 months in therapy, Enrique’s relationships with his family have improved and they are grateful for the support from Foothill Family. Foothill Family's dedicated team is committed to working with youth, building trust and finding ways to break through barriers to support and heal our youth and families. #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #arttherapy #healing

Crazy. Insane. Schizophrenic. Psychotic. Psycho. Nuts. These words are so ingrained in our everyday vernacular that most hardly notice or even think about using them. What you may not realize is using these terms can be hurtful to people who live with mental illness. It perpetuates the negative stigma connected to mental health and trivializes people’s lived experiences. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 U.S. adults experiences mental illness in a ...given year, and 1 in 25 experiences a "serious mental illness" one that "substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities." Words matter. Be aware of the words you use and consider alternative descriptive words or phrases instead. Need some ideas? Mind-blowing, mind-boggling, out of bounds, ridiculous, strange, ludicrous or preposterous. Have some additional suggestions? Share them below!

At only 5-years old, Joey was abandoned by his father. His mother lost her rights to reunify with him due to her drug abuse. Joey moved around from foster home to foster home. Finally, a foster family sought to take legal guardianship of him. The pain inside Joey became too great from him to bear. He lashed out in anger and began to hurt himself and those around him.... These behaviors became too difficult for his foster family and the guardianship process was halted. This is when Foothill Family came into his life. Our caring and compassionate team became the one constant in his life. This is Joey’s story

After being neglected by his parents, Oscar started living with his grandmother at only four months old. By age 13, Oscar struggled to listen, follow directions, and became physically and verbally aggressive towards his aunt and her young children. Foothill Family’s Wraparound Program team came alongside and provided Oscar and his extended family therapy sessions to help him process the trauma he had experienced throughout his life. Oscar has learned ways to reduce his aggr...essive behavior towards his family and has higher self-confidence to express his needs and wants in positive ways. Oscar’s grades and relationships at school have improved drastically and he has worked hard to improve his communication with his young family members. In turn, his family is learning to listen and acknowledge Oscar’s positive changes and encourage him on the progress he has made. #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #healing #family

Michael was a happy-go-lucky teen with a #dream to become a professional tennis player. One day, he tragically came home to find his cousin, who died by suicide. Devastated, Michael spent many years not talking about what happened that day. Living with his grandparents, the norm at his house was to not talk about feelings. Michael’s anger and pain were escalating and evident in his strained relationships and struggles at school and at home. Michael and his grandmother came ...to Foothill Family for Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy. When he learned he was having a normal reaction to #trauma and there was #help for him, he was relieved. Finally being able to express her feelings of immense grief about the tragedy Michael experienced, his grandmother began her own journey of healing and stood by his side to support him as he processed his trauma. With his therapist’s help, Michael began to talk about and write down the details of what he experienced, learned coping strategies and was shown tools to positively express his grief. He was no longer alone with the pain of what he witnessed that day. Over time, Michael has worked through his built-up feelings of anger and guilt. His grades went up and his relationships with his friends and family have dramatically improved. He continues to work toward his dream and is consistently improving his tennis skills. The mental health of our youth is so important, especially during these challenging times. If your child could benefit from additional support, call us at 626-993-3000.

Shout out to our incredible team over at the Pomona Family Violence Treatment Network Program on this #FeelGoodFriday for creating these love-filled movie baskets to encourage ongoing conversations and activities at home. The baskets were filled with art supplies to tap into their creativity as a family and build on their parent-child relationship. And of course a movie basket is not complete without some all-time snack favorites.
