A local historian told me today that the cemetery curbs on Pine Street between Fourteenth and Tequesquite were a WPA project, so I went to look and... sure enough. WPA 1941.

Did you know that Evergreen Memorial Historic Cemetery is as beautiful as it because Judge Vic Miceli led the effort to restore it? By the 1990s, the oldest, historic area of the cemetery was run down and neglected. The effort to restore it began in 2003 and was led by Judge Miceli. His headstone is near the corner of Pine and Fourteenth Sts.

Sunset over Evergreen, and a red-tailed hawk surveying the grounds from one of our big old pine trees. (Maybe he’ll catch one of our many gophers unawares?)

Lots of families are at the cemetery today - I especially like the sight of families who bring lawn chairs and sit/visit with their loved one.

This is an especially beautiful time of year to visit Evergreen Memorial Historic Cemetery. On the historic side, our Wreaths Across America contributions decorate many of the veterans’ headstones - it’s a beautiful sight, and we thank everyone who sponsored a wreath. On the commercial side of the cemetery, families have decorated loved ones’ graves in creative and heartfelt ways. I took these photos in the late afternoon of the shortest day of the year. Come visit while the wreaths are still up just be sure to arrive before the gates are locked @4:30pm.
