The Greeting Committee- This was taken my first night in the Yukon Territories after a thousand miles of fires in British Columbia. I was greeted by a spectacular showing of the northern lights that started up before it even got dark. No they did not charge my solar panels and yes it was cold. Getting ready to head back out on the road after a couple of repairs on the camper and I can't wait.

Duality- Taken during a brief, but generally pleasant extraterrestrial abduction. No kangaroo rats were harmed during this light painting extravaganza. Also, check how the sedimentary lines and colors of the foreground rock continue on into the crossbedded brainrock in background. Loved this place. @ Vermillion Cliffs National Monument

Electric Intersections- (scroll for black and white...lemme know, which version tickles your fancy) When I first came across this insane tic-tac-toe colony, it was dry. Formed by wind, water, ice and time, I desperately wanted to see the water element. A couple months later after studying some weather, I returned and got my wish...plus some. Flash flooding is much safer when you are on high ground like this, but the lightning makes things a little dicey...and awesome. I'm leading workshops to this remote area later this spring and next fall. DM me if you wanna go explore that new new desert scenery and improve your skills. @ Page, Arizona

Shrine to The Otherworldly- While I certainly cannot lay claim to the discovery of this formation, I must say that after much deliberation that I consider it to be the most outstanding singular hoodoo that I know of in the world. There are bigger ones. There are ones with more elaborate coloration, but for intricacy and overall visual impact-this is my pick. I rarely feel so definitively about hierarchical rankings of natural beauty, but this place left me speechless. I...t definitely helps that in the course of 48 hours exploring this area that I witnessed lightning strike behind it, a rainbow form overhead, a beautiful sunset explode behind it(pictured here) and to top it off, while shooting the milky way rising over it to the south, a burrowing owl silently flew into frame and sat motionless five feet away from me until the click of my camera shutter startled it. I promise to share these images in the coming weeks and look forward to hearing what you think. For now, please let me know in the comments about places or experiences in nature that were clearly a cut above. Taken with @Nikon D850 and @Sigmaphoto 14-24 art @ Farmington, New Mexico

InFinCity- I spent a lot of time this last fall scouting areas I'd denoted as "insane looking" thru satellite imagery research. What began as an afternoon hike lingered into the wee hours of the night as I saw just how mindbogglingly cool this entire area was. This was one of the more difficult light painting challenges I've ever undertaken because the sandstone fins here are endless, but extremely delicate and I didn't want to crunch any as the only footprints I saw were fro...m kangaroo rats on the lower right sand dune. While I understand the utility of low level lighting, for scenes with this much topography I am an advocate of high intensity low angle light bounced off of ones body and used creatively as one wanders around the scene. I never get it right on the first take, but I generally find the freedom to illuminate the scene in front of you as you read the landscape fun and exciting.
