New half marathon PR! I get it, not everyone loves running, but there is a big benefit to making a conscious effort to smile while you run (an effort that got much harder for me later in this race ) . Of course we smile when we’re happy, but research suggests that you can make yourself feel happy by smiling. You may enjoy running more, just by smiling more . A small study suggests that smiling while running increases running economy (how well your body uses oxygen), so it can actually improve your running!

I used a 45 minute aerobic run as my benchmark throughout training for this half marathon. In that first run, to hit around an 8:20/mi pace, I was at 96% of my lactate threshold (177 bpm)in other words, working too hard for an easy run. The majority of my runs where much slower than this, but I kept coming back to it to see where I was. Notice how over time, to hold around the same pace, my heart rate was lower, meaning less effort. My lactate threshold has since improved ...(181 bpm), so this last benchmark run was very encouraging to hit the same percentage of lactate threshold at a faster pace. .. There’s a reason I nerd out over running metricsit’s important if you want to improve! If you keep hitting a wall in your training or during a race, chances are you’re running too hard in the majority of your training. Respect where your body is NOW, and trust the process. .. In depth blog post on heart rate/effort based training coming soon! See more

Great post by the incredible Deena Kastor! Listen to your body, know when to back off, and always find a positive outlook #Repost @deena8050 with @get_repost Today, I’m sitting by a lake I would typically be running around. At least I know to give myself a good view.... Almost two weeks ago, very near where I sit, I tripped over a dog and her leash. I got therapy and continued to put in the final hard week of training for the Berlin Marathon. It hurt. Yesterday, I finally got an X-ray which revealed I had broken my ankle. Almost immediately, my goal of getting an @wmmajors 6-Star medal became a goal of healing. Sometimes you get so close to your goal you can taste it, and yet in this moment there is not a cell of self-pity. As I’ve practiced positivity over the years it seems readily available when I need it most. My silver lining through all of this is, I guess I have something to chase in 2020! To all of you planning fall races, I wish you the best in your final preparation. Most likely, I’ll be cheering with the other crazy fans on the roadside. And YOU, chasing your 6-Star medal, I’ll continue to join you in this prestigious undertaking!
