About a year ago, an enormous wall of fire raced down the hillside and threatened to quickly consume our academy. The evidence and impact of the burning remain and are easy to see. What is not easy to see is the incredible levels of bravery, care, sense of duty, and purposeful leadership that immediately emerged. And that is why we walked today. To acknowledge and honor the response of our Keelhauler community that day amidst acute danger. And in that dangerous and challengin...g moment on October 27, 2019, the finest qualities of leadership shown through brightly, literally in the crucible of fire. We remember, we honor, and we are grateful for the remarkable Keelhauler spirit that prevailed one year ago. We invite you to extend a warm thank you to the visible, composed, vocal, resilient, and dedicated people both on and off campus who protected and restored our gem of an academy. See more

Good Morning and Welcome to Keelhauler Week! What is Keelhauler Week? Keelhauler Week is a time for us to come together as the Keelhauler Community to reflect on where we have been, where we are going, and what makes us unique. This week will provide opportunities to engage with one another (even if we cannot be in the same places) and to reflect on what being a Keelhauler means to you. You can see the complete schedule at https://www.csum.edu/campus-news/2020/keelhauler-...week.html Today’s Highlight: Best Day at Cal Maritime As we start the week, we are asking the Keelhauler Community to reflect on some positive moments in your time at Cal Maritime and submit either a picture from that day or one that represents the memory. Our goal is to take the pictures and be able to make something that can become a permanent fixture on the campus. You can submit your Best Day at https://bit.ly/34s5ZWT #KeelhaulerWeek #CalMaritime

The coronavirus has dramatically altered the educational landscape at Cal Maritime but cadets in Prof. Colin Dewey’s Maritime Culture class discovered just one benefit: a visiting lecturer that otherwise wouldn’t have made it to class. When we had to shift to online teaching it was a steep learning curve but the ease with which we can bring people together can be a real plus. For this class I often bring maritime industry figures from the local area to visit and talk to cadets, said Dewey. This time I was able to invite renowned maritime historian and writer Marcus Rediker to join us from Pennsylvania because he Zoomed inno worries about travel arrangements or accommodations!
