Hi, I’m Suzanne Isken, Executive Director of Craft Contemporary, and if you’re watching this, I already love you thank you for being part of our family. I’m here this year to talk about year-end-giving. It’s been a rough year for all of us. You know it as well as I do. Our doors have been closed since March. We have had very little income, and we’re looking to have a huge year-end giving campaign that would give us the funding we need to keep the lights on to go into next y...ear and come back with a bang! MATERIALS & APPLICATIONS ORGANIZING AS ARCHITECTURAL LABOR SEPTEMBER 19 10 AM PST 6DEGREES.LA Organizing as Architectural Labor brings together four architectural coalitions to speak to contemporary practices that emergent architects are undertaking to address systemic racism in architecture. Moderated by M&A Director Jia Yi Gu, the conversation will address how architects are deploying skills of organizing, group-building, and care-taking in a long term manner, b...uilding new social and political infrastructures and modeling new systems of care for architectural practice across all sites including in cultural practice, pedagogy, and professional sectors. L.A.-based coalitions help create proximity among organizations and individuals within a sprawling geographic area. They also help affirm the presence of often overlooked cultural forces across different creative sectors. ... As a part of 6, @theicala presents a session on coalition formation. This session can be experienced as an audio recording. Turn it on and listen to interviews with leaders of recently formed coalitions in our city that specifically focus on obtaining financial support for individuals and small arts organizations. In this session, we’ll hear about the urgency and strategies behind forming a coalition so that, in alliance, unheard voices in the cultural choir are heard. This conversation will explore Jacob and Matson’s personal experiences and take on the emergence and evolution of fiber art, including reflections on their relationship to material and what inspires them. How does the institution evolve over time? Upon its founding as the Egg & the Eye by Edith Wylie, the institution’s goal was always to highlight marginalized, and global, art. Over the course of its 55-year history, however, the institution has had to resolve some of the problematic aspects of its legacy in order to create a more democratic public space. Some of the steps that the museum has taken include: transforming from a private to a public non-profit model, deac...cessioning its permanent collection, and changing its name from Craft & Folk Art Museum to Craft Contemporary. After confronting its past, how can Craft Contemporary continue to evolve in the future? How can the field as a whole start to move away from one central, and Eurocentric, narrative in order to relocate craft in the multiplicities of local narratives?
