Fascia is EVERYWHERE to quote a special, late professor from PT school. But what is it? Fascia is like a web in our bodies. It is connective tissue that envelops, supports, and protects muscles, muscle groups, organs, and the body as a whole. Fascia allows for smooth gliding of structures past one another during movement so in essence it helps us move. How does it affect me? If fascia is restricted it can cause decreased circulation, slower nerve impulses, decreased fl...exibility leading to decreased range of motion, and inevitably pain. What do I do? Fascia is believed to play a role in all injuries and dysfunction in one way or another given its vast reach in the body. It is important to be aware of your nutrition, hydration, posture, strength, and flexibility in order to restore or maintain healthy fascia. #costamesaphysicaltherapy #costamesa #physicaltherapy #fascia #connectivetissue #pain #strength #flexibility #nutrition #posture #hydration #education @ Costa Mesa Physical Therapy See more

I’ve tried everything and I’m still in pain! What do you know about stem cell therapy? So here’s a bit about what is known: Stem cell therapy is a type of regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine is the process of creating living, functional tissues to repair or replace tissues or organ function lost due to age, disease, damage, or congenital defects (NIH). Stem cells come from blood, bone marrow, fat, or placenta tissues. There are several potential benefits of s...tem cell therapy. For starters, it increases options for treatment. It is natural and minimally invasive. It promotes healing to decrease pain and improve quality of life. Stem cell therapy may be an avenue to potential future advances in medicine to treat common chronic conditions. That’s all great, but who can benefit from it and are there any risks? ... As of now it appears that candidates include those with arthritis (hip, shoulder, knee, ankle), meniscal or labral tears, tendinopathy or tears, articulate cartilage damage, bone defects, or ligamentous and muscle injuries. Research is in the works and while there is a lot of good and promising results, there is always a risk with newer technology. It’s important to know that stem cell therapy is not FDA approved. If you are having a procedure done it is important to ask questions and get the facts. What type of cells are they using? Is it 100% pure stem cells (if it’s not approved, it most likely isn’t!)? Can I see the research? Is this FDA approved or IND (investigational new drug application; plan submitted and approved to proceed by the FDA)? While the research is promising, there is still a lot unknown. And the FDA is increasing its oversight and enforcement to protect people from dishonest and unscrupulous stem cell clinics, while continuing to encourage innovation so that the medical industry can properly harness the potential of stem cell products. #costamesaphysicaltherapy #costamesa #phsyicaltherapy #regeneativemedicines #stemcelltherapy #research #benefits #risks #selfhealing #naturalhealing #minimallyinvasive #arthritis #pain #mobility #function #qualityoflife #askquestions #potential See more

We aim to inspire our patients, but it works both ways. Our patients inspire us daily. Today’s post is inspired with a specific patient in mind! Let’s talk bicep tenodesis. Check out that picture . Do you See where the long head tendon of the biceps is cut (sounds scarier than it is!) and is reattached to the humerus. Cutting the tendon releases pressure from the biceps and/or the labrum to which it attaches in the shoulder. This procedure is typically performed to addre...ss biceps tendinitis or tear. Recovery is about 4-6 months and a favorable outcome is common...especially when physical therapy is involved!! #costamesaphysicaltherapy #costamesa #physicaltherapy #physical #therapy #shoulderpathology #shoulder #bicepstendinitis #tendinitis #bicepstenodesis #biceps #longheadbicepstendon #humerus #labrum #patientinspiration #inspiration #popcorn See more

Does your hip hurt? Is it the outside of your hip? Is it aggravated with lying on your affected side, moving from lying down to sitting up to standing, walking and climbing stairs, or moving after being static for a long time? If you answered yes, you might have trochanteric bursitis. Did you know that the trochanteric bursa is the most commonly inflamed bursa in the hip region. It can have a traumatic onset or a gradual one: fall, bumping your hip, running, bicycling, standi...ng with your hip popped. The musculature surrounding the bursa rubs causing friction and therefore pain and inflammation. Good news! PT can help! We will assess and create a treatment plan customized to you and your needs. Knee osteoarthritis, it’s a condition where the cartilage in your knee joint wears down so the bony surfaces are in contact with each other. About 1 in 5 adults in the US will develop arthritis (Cheng YJ et al. 2010), but does this automatically mean you’ll need surgery? Not necessarily. Physical therapy has been shown to have great outcomes for limiting the disability that comes with arthritis. Strengthening the quadriceps (front thigh muscles) and glutes (buttocks muscles) ...have been shown to help minimize pain and maximize function for people with knee arthritis (Amin S et al., 2009; Chang A et al., 2005). Increasing your strength and staying active can also decrease knee stiffness that often accompanies knee arthritis. Lastly, exercise can help promote weight loss! Less weight equals less compressive forces at the joint, which can lead to less pain. Surgery might be an option to consider in the future, but try PT first! Motion is lotion for joints! #costamesaphysicaltherapy #costamesa #physicaltherapy. #knee #osteoarthritis #oa #conservativetreatment #exercise #movement #motion See more
