Great news!! In collaboration with the City of Moterey, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Surfriders, Sustainable Monterey, Portola Hotel, and caring community members; the Monterey City Council unanimously passed the plastic straw ordinance that will help protect the environment while being respectful of the needs of the community with disabilities. CCCIL had 4 community members speak specifically about the need for allowing the opportunity for people with disabilities to reque...st a plastic straw if needed. Their personal stories underscored the importance of having this exemption. Of the 4 speakers, we had 2 parents who recently finished a 7-part series Parent Leadership workshop that help develop the skills and abilities in being advocates for their children. Our 2 parent graduates spoke to a legislative body for the first time. Thanks to their courage in speaking up and telling their stories to decision makers, Monterey is now a better place for the community with disabilities. Thank you to worked quickly to help advocate the rights of our community with disabilities: > Johnny Morales, CCCIL Board member and consumer > Sandy Nyles, mother of Joseph Escalante, CCCIL consumer > Teresa Zamudio, Parent Leadership graduate >Melissa Salazar, Parent Leadership graduate You may see the City of Monterey City Council meeting 11/20/2018 rebroadcast at: https://monterey.org//The/Council-Meetings-Video-on-Demand
