America has still so far to go on this 155th Anniversary of Juneteenth! The Presbyterian Historical Society's blog points out that while Granger's announcement of the abolition of slavery at Galveston TX was very welcome news to those still in bondage, "for many, proclamations and announcements were simply words. Practices like sharecropping, lynching, and targeted law enforcement allowed the peculiar institution to continue on in many forms well past the ratification of the ...13th Amendment. It has taken many years of social and intellectual activism by major figures like Octavius V. Catto, James W.C. Pennington (both ordained Presbyterian ministers), W.E.B. Du Bois, and so many more to further the evolution of what it means to be free in the United States. Juneteenth is a way to celebrate, not just emancipation, but the many battles that have been won while also reminding us that there are yet many to fight." It is incumbent upon all believers in the PCUSA and beyond to continue in activism because it is so clear that our nation remains one that still struggles to say that Black Lives Matter. Juneteenth is already set aside on our Church Calendar for observance and I fully endorse a Juneteenth National Holiday as a way of remembering that moment of de jure progress in Galveston long ago as well as setting aside a national holiday on which all of us should actively call our society to greater de facto justice and reconciliation! As we continue to pray for our world during the COVID 19 pandemic, we also continue to keep Sabbath and Worship on the Lord's Day. This week, please look for a complete bulletin in MS Word in your email boxes today, so that we can all worship in the safety of our homes. The bulletin will have all Scripture passages and hymns along with links to musical accompaniment. The sermon will be sent separately tomorrow.

Dear Church Family, I ask your prayers for the Elders on Session and for me as we seek to lead Calvary Presbyterian Church in such frightening and uncertain times amid the constantly changing information coming to us from government channels as the world seeks to survive the Coronavirus. Among the Great Ends of the Church is our calling to be stewards of the Maintenance of Divine Worship. That is a calling that your Session takes very seriously and I want to commend the fa...ithfulness and openness of our Personnel/Administration Chair and Worship Committee Chair (Pamela Wilson and Stephen MacDonald) as they have worked with me during these unpredictable and increasingly serious times. In addition to sending everyone in our data base a complete a Worship Service in PowerPoint pdf and my sermon last Sunday, about 10 of us did gather to worship physically in our sanctuary. There was a willingness to forge on and even gather in numbers less than 10 this Sunday as well; however, we have now determined to hold no more choir practices or in-person Worship Services in the month of March. That does not mean that we are cancelling worship. By no means! I am preparing a full Worship Service to send to you for use in your homes. All Scripture passages and litanies will be included. Hymn scans along with links for youtube audio accompaniment will be also be embedded so that you and your family and friends can have a full worship experience. I ask you to take seriously the challenge of leading and enjoying worship in your homes and to even be punctual about it - starting together at 10:15 AM. Please look for the bulletin later today and do forward it to family and friends here and around the globe who may not have full worship resources in their hands. I will also send my completed sermon on Saturday. I would also encourage you to continue your faithful financial stewardship in these days. Our church will need to meet its usual obligations and we ask that you mail in your tithes and offerings on schedule, whether you do so weekly, quarterly, or whatever.
