Let’s talk W sitting. I realize this isn’t directly Montessori related but toddlers and preschool aged kids spend a lot of time on the floor! I have seen this in my classroom and am aware it’s not good for kids. I’m having a hard time redirecting my little from sitting this way though. I am curious and would love to hear from fellow moms: Who’s child is guilty of this? Who consciously tries to correct it? If so how? My little has been into peeling everything! She loves stickers, peeling crayons, peeling cuties, even peeling cardboard. We have stickers and little pieces of paper everywhere! I asked a few fellow Montessorians and someone mentioned Velcro. I came up with this fun and challenging work. It became a family project from sanding the block, cutting the strips, sticking them on, to realizing we needed to staple gun the strips on. The benefits from this work include: The Velcro ...is really strong and created a strong challenge for the fine motor skills. Matching the size of the Velcro strips sparks spacial awareness. Child development experts say you can expect your little one to concentrate for about 2-5 minutes times their age. Eye-hand coordination is challenged when lining up the pieces. Independence is achieved when your little becomes so engrossed in the work that they don’t notice you walked away to finish the dishes or feed baby brother!! See more

I am hopeful that we have designed a book that is intriguing to the child from the artwork, to the act of tracing the letters to the music. We want the book kids pull of the shelf on their own!
