Teaching/heart surgery medical mission to Africa. Good people, good times, good memories. Finally got around to posting this from earlier this year.... Cardiac surgeon Dr. Aubyn, ER physician/professor of emergency medicine Dr. Rich, cardiologist/pediatric intensivist Dr. Barbara, physiotherapist Emmanuel from Nigeria, and I, as the lead instructor, first met up in Benin City, Nigeria for a scout mission and to train the local providers (mostly cardiologists and surgeons, along with nurses, med students, and others) in ACLS, ECG , algorithms, meds, advanced airway procedures and vent management, I/O, and surgery in preparation to open an OR for cardiac surgeries to service a population of 12-15 million. The local providers’ passion for medicine and their enthusiasm for learning was inspiring and encouraging and made the trip well worth it. The entire time, I felt so fortunate for the opportunity to have joined such a dream-team of top-notch providers. Although it took months to coordinate the agenda, it all went smoothly and was a complete success. Interesting first time I ever taught while we had security with AKs and a grenade launcher at the doorways, and being escorted everywhere, but it did seem overall safe, and it was an absolute pleasure to meet and work with everyone there. After Nigeria, our team flew to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to join another team slated for surgeries, and taught the local cardiologists and other providers. RCP Lynn, in her role as mission coordinator for Tanzania, stayed so busy almost literally 24/7, and did an incredibly amazing job, and all the surgeries successful. Then a boat trip to Zanzibar for a day of R&R. Very laid back placeand everyone says Jambo, JamboHakuna Matata Everyone was awesome. Made some new friends. Long days but rewarding and definitely well worth it. My son and his fiancé joined a different mission to the Dominican Republic in 2019 (we loved it there) and they did some very strong work. Great start to their careers as RCPs . Hopefully, they can join on another mission someday.

Effective immediately, classes through March are canceled. This temporary closure is our best measure to protect our students from exposure to the virus from other healthcare providers in class, then bringing it home to their loved ones and respective healthcare settings. April classes are posted for enrollment on the website, and dependent upon the status of the outbreak and CDC recommendations; we hope to resume classes at that time.
