When you look at all the beautiful young horses I cannot help but wondering what happens to them all as they get older. So many just disappear. So few actually ...make it. It’s such a difficult process and there are so many pitfalls along the way. Either way you seem doomed. If you have a great one trainers a clamoring to ride it and on most occasions if the horse is sweet and willing they end up frying it. If the horse is not so great nobody wants to help and you find yourself struggling on your own. Most people don’t trust themselves to ride a young horse, perhaps with good reason. What to do? As a starting point I think you need to buy a horse you can ride. If you cannot ride it, don’t buy it. This has little to do with age. I have a 4 year old that is truly enjoyable, truly bombproof and I can take her anywhere. She may not know everything but anyone can ride her and would enjoy her. Have fun. If you and your horse is not having fun it will not work. Work on the horses strengths. Do what the horse do best. Botichelli loves to Piaff. Every day I finish with a bit of Piaff so I can praise him and make his muscles feel great. Vivian the 4 year old loves to canter. So that’s what we do. Change the work. Find out what other activities your horse likes. Trail, poles, a fast canter and do some of that. Nintendo goes on the trail every single day. Vivian loves poles etc. When the horses are happy and motivated they get injured less, they will do more for you in the ring and you feel safer on them because they’ll have your backhappy Friday See more

Thank you Pacific Dressage for putting on a wonderful fall Schooling Show! This show had a ton of great competition showing today! Such a nice turn out of horses and riders! To start I want to say thank you to our barn members for always supporting and helping! You guys are truly amazing! We took Xena to her very first show being ridden under saddle and she was amazing! Showed her in intro test A and we received a score of 69.6% which put us in FIRST place!
