I've settled on a sign design for my gallery at Little River Inn. I'm having an opening Friday, March 9 from 4 to 6 pm. Please come by for food, wine from Pacific Star, music by Marcus McCallen, and fun.

Announcing the John Birchard Mendocino Photographs Gallery! I'm really excited to announce that the wonderful people at the Little River Inn have given me my o...wn gallery space! It's in the newly opened spa at Little River Inn (next to the Pro Shop). I was invited to bring my 20+ years of photographing the beauty of Mendocino County to enhance the ambience of the new spa. I've already filled the walls with some of my framed land and seascape photographs and am bringing in some bins for unframed work. There's lots of new images and some old favorites. The spa/gallery is open seven days a week from 10 am to 5 pm. Michelle and Laurie, who run the spa can answer questions, take orders and sell photos. I live only about a mile away, and am always happy to meet interested customers there for consultation. Everything is 20% off until the end of the year, so if you are still looking for Christmas presents, please come on by. I've included a few photos of the interior. See more

During that spell of nice weather early in February, I got out one evening and took this photo looking north along the Mendocino Headlands. The sun was already low when I started shooting. I tried a few bracketed exposures which I planned to use to make a high dynamic range merge, but just before the sun went down I caught this one shot with a long exposure. The upper part of the rocks was still illuminated by the setting sun, but it was dark enough that I could get about ...a 2 second exposure at f 22 to blur the moving ocean waves. The tonal range was just right--no large blacked out areas, or burned out sky. I did darken the sky with a graduated filter in Lightroom, and also used Lightroom to crop, and otherwise intensify the image. It's one of my best this year, I think. Do you like it with the people in it, or do you think I should take them out? See more
