WHEN DO KIDS LEARN TO READ? Find the developmental answer in this article by Understood : https://www.understood.org/art//when-do-kids-learn-to-read
On a budget and looking for a way to practice sight words? Teaching Mama has you covered! Sight word readers and editable games can be found on this website!
This summer, I discovered DIY. It's a little like YouTube, but all the videos are made by kids for kids! There are also courses made by adults, and these are carefully screened before being added for your child to view. Kids watch inspiring videos, do creative projects, and make their own videos on DIY, giving them unique opportunities to learn and inspire other kids. Our moderators make sure DIY remains the kindest online community on the planet, and they are available 7... days a week if your kids ever have questions. Click below to check it out. You can sign up to get 30 days FREE. If you decide to continue, it is $7.99 per month. When you use my link, I get a little kickback for advertising their product, helping me continue to serve the home school community. See more
I don't usually share campaigns or political actions here, but this is specifically about the safety of children. I will only share it once. There are two bills before Congress to end corporal punishment, the use of unnecessary and dangerous restraint, and seclusion rooms (different from time out, these are dark, locked rooms where children with behavioral issues are often left for long periods of time when staff forgets they are in there!). If you are wondering what staff ...will be able to do with teenagers who are dangerous, they are still allowed to use safe forms of restraint for emergency situations. The situation right now is that the restraints - even the dangerous ones like the one that killed George Floyd - are being used on young kids for non-violent infractions. To put it bluntly, children have died because of it. The children most targeted are black, brown, and the disabled, all of whom may communicate or behave in ways their teachers may not understand. Let's promote more understanding and less violence. Please click the link to find out more, and you will also see a prewritten letter you can use to let your Congressional representatives know you would like them to support HR3474 and HR3836. #HurtingIsNotHelping
Boy, I could have used this when my kids were young!
WriteShop Homeschool Community has great ideas for kids starting to write stories up through the middle grades. This article goes over some common grammar errors so you can make sure your older child avoids them. I've just been going over some of these with my 4th-grade students, so I would say that's about the starting age for this. However, if it comes up earlier, go ahead and cover it!
This Reading Mama is another favorite of mine. Click the "SIGN ME UP" button to become a subscriber and access all her freebies. They are excellent!
Using your sensory system while enjoying nature.
If you've been stuck inside for too long, save these activities for sunny days! A few can even be done indoors. Core strength is great for sitting up straight in your seat and writing, so make sure all ages find something they like to do! It's time for action!
Try this little writing "game" at home with your family to spark ideas for writing! I have had great success with reluctant writers after playing this game with them, but it's more fun with several friends or family members!
