& The mouth is the entry point to your digestive and respiratory tracts and keeping the mouth healthy is important for both your oral and overall health. The oral cavity harbors over 700 species of bacteria and other organisms collectively known as the microbiome. The key is to keep the oral microbiome in a state of balance so they can properly function to keep your mouth healthy and happy. As we know, daily brushing and flossing are importa...nt steps. But what else can be done? According to research, food, stress and exercise also play a significant role in oral health. During these stressful times, self-care is incredibly important. Below are some research based recommendations to maintain your oral health. : Choose foods that are alkalizing, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich, such as cucumbers, avocados, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflowers, apricots, berries & apples. A list of alkalizing foods can be found on the internet. Also very important is reducing the consumption of sugars and sweeteners. :Movement is good- research has shown that exercising as little as fifteen minutes a day can increase circulatory function, which includes circulation to teeth and gums. Blood supply and circulation in the mouth helps reduce tooth decay and inflammation. : Given the current state of the world, your stress is probably on steroids which is why it is even more important to focus on self-care and de-stressing. Stress impacts salivary function and muscular control. Stress can lead to day or night teeth grinding or clenching which can wear down your teeth and can cause muscle and joint pain. Stress can also lead to dry mouth, which can contribute to gum disease and tooth decay. Exercise, meditation & yoga are great ways to reduce stress. : Sleep is a fundamental process of the human body, which regulates core biological functions. Sleep allows our body to recover and rejuvenate. During this extra stressful time, sleep is an important part of oral care. See more

? Fear and anxiety are common reactions to a dental visit. In fact, according to a 2018 survey conducted by DentaVox , 61% of people worldwide have a fear of going to the dentist. Anxiety is one of the leading reasons why people avoid dental visits. Studies have shown that a therapeutic technique called deep pressure stimulation calms the nervous system, resulting in the body moving from a fight or flight respo...nse to a more relaxed and rested state- Weighted blankets are capable of activating this pressure stimulation resulting in a reduction in anxiety. The latest technology in weighted blankets utilizes "SmartWeight" technology which is able to activate more nerves with less weight so that the patient doesn't feel confined or trapped. Patients have found these blankets reduce anxiety and are a great alternative to traditional pharmaceutical relaxation methods. Baldwin, DDS offers medical grade, high quality blankets that use the "SmartWeight" technology to help calm the body and senses. The blankets also help regulate body temperature to assist in making your dental visit as comfortable as possible. See more
