Professor Mel Day SJSU is currently teaching a BA senior project seminar class at SJSU. Even though her students have been unable to install their final capstone projects in a physical gallery, Professor Day was still able to get her student’s work into a virtual gallery. From May 5- May 25, 2020, students will be able to display their work to the public through the online Kunstmatrix Gallery! Link: https://artspaces.kunstmatrix.com//6/alone-t-o-g-e-t-h-e-r

Lynn Dau is a professor of beginning sculpture at SJSU. In her latest assignment "Wrap It Up," she asked her students to wrap different objects together to make a sculpture, using these objects as a means of expression. This picture depicts an example from Professor Dau’s class, called "March 23, 2020." Although she has found it quite challenging to teach her studio art students remotely, she is rising to the occasion and making the best out of a difficult situation. All in all, Professor Dau is doing what many professors are doing around the world to provide the students the education they deserve during a time like this.

The work above, Interactive Randomness, was done by Jiatao Xu, an SJSU art student, in a coding assignment taught by his professor, Cleia Dantas. Cleia Dantas is a Digital Media Arts professor at San Jose State University. She is currently teaching an Introductory course in Digital Media Art during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. During this time, many teachers, faculty, etc. have had to transform their classrooms into an online learning space. Professor Dantas has been able to transform her classroom without much difficulty because a majority of her students were using Canvas as a classroom tool. Dantas is able to create lectures and demonstrations through Zoom and has been able to carry out the assignments and has created an environment for her students to learn key lessons as shown in the picture.

In Art 151, Professor Irene Carvajal teaches her class about Serigraphy, or screen-printing. For the project "The Painterly Print", students must become creative in their approach to screen-printing, whether they create their own inks, use pastels, change the type of screen they use, or do something else entirely. Professor Carvajal challenges her students to explore different possibilities by creating art out of unexpectedly happy accidents.

Make sure to check in your locker by Thursday, May 16th at 4:30pm! All you need to do is clear out your locker completely, take a photo of your empty locker (with the locker number that is already painted on the inner door and the back of your locker showing), then fill out the form online at bit.ly/artlocker. It’s that easy! Make sure to leave your locker locked after you check-in! If you are unsure if you have a locker that needs to be turned in, you can come to the Art Office in Art room 116. There is no need to come to the art office if you check in online.
